Picone Exotic Orchards
We took advantage of a quiet winters day to escape to our favourite orchard. Picones Exotic Orchards is a fine example of what hard work and vision can create. The one hectare orchard is completely enclosed by exclusion netting meaning that the birds, bats and nasty bugs such as fruit fly cannot access the fruit. Our host John Picone delighted us with fresh fruit tasting and as always he shared with us his wealth of knowledge. We loved the deep red pitayas, Brazillian guavas, hand pollinated vanilla beans and Nagasakiwase loquats but our favourite moment of the day was tasting the rollinia fruit, many of us had not tried them before and everyone loved their soft lemony flesh. At the end of the day we left the orchard very happy, very sticky and smelling like passionfruit juice.
Picone Exotic Orchards is open for group tours. $25 per head with a minimum group of 10, maximum 20. Anyone interested can contact John piconeexotics@gmail.com
Daleys Pick of the Day - Rollinia Tasting
The rollinia won the day on our visit to Picones Exotic Orchards. The flesh is soft and gooey with a jelly-like texture and a hint of lemon to taste. They are beautiful looking fruits which ripen to bright yellow with delicate pointed projections covering the skin, as they damage and dicolour easily they are seldom seen in the shops. Rollinias are reasonably easy to grow as long as they are provided with a warm frost free position and perfect drainage. The fruits ripen in the winter so they do require a climate with mild winter temperatures. Seedling trees will commence fruiting in about 4 years and are very productive once they fully mature.
Sunset Backyard Beauties - Dwarf Peaches and Nectarines
If you have limited space and are looking for a pair of ornamental and productive fruit trees you can't go past the Sunset Backyard Beauties. These dwarf peaches and nectarines are stunning ornamental trees which have burgendy coloured foliage, pretty pink spring flowers and scrumptious full sized fruits in late spring, early summer. They are low chill varieties that are well suited to areas with little or no frost and mild winters. They are also perfect for pots and only grow 1 - 1.5m when fully grown.
