Nut Trees
With the change in season many nut trees are starting to drop their crop. Macadamia, Chestnuts, pecans, hazelnuts, Malabar chestnuts and bunyas are all falling and there is a bounty to be collected from under these trees. Many of these trees are spectacular specimens as well as be highly productive in the home orchard. There is so much variety in the nut trees that there is something to suit everyone's backyard. Chestnuts and pecans are large deciduous shade trees that are perfect for parks and larger gardens while the evergreen bunya nut creates an impressive silhouette in the landscape, caution should be taken not to plant it where anyone will sit or park their car as the falling nuts can be considered a health hazard and will put a hefty dent in any vehicle if parked below a falling nut. Hazelnuts are perfect for hedge rows; macadamias are dense and shady while the Malabar chestnuts have impressive swollen trunks and spectacular scented nocturnal flowers that display their relationship to the baobab family.
Sensational Sapodilla Trees
The sapodilla is a real treat for anyone who loves really sweet treats. The soft grainy flesh has the texture of a pear but taste similar to brown sugar. Sapodilla trees are very slow growing so you will need to patient if you decide to grow one as they do take many years to mature, however grafted trees will begin fruiting at a young age and they are perfect for growing in containers. Sapodillas are also perfect for coastal gardens as they are tolerant of both salt and windy conditions. The chewy dried sap of the sapodilla tree was discovered by the Mayan people many centuries ago and by the early 1900's it was commercialized in the USA and at its peak of production about 6 million kg of dried sap was being imported by the USA, flavoured and sold as chewing gum. Like rubber the trees can be tapped every couple of years. The name sapodilla does not refer to the sap but comes from the Spanish zapotilla, meaning small fruit.
