Bamboo - Timor Black (Cutting) 8/10

Amanda's Edible Fruits
Update: 2306 days 20hrs

Comments: - An edible clumping giant bamboo. Grows alot slower than our other varieties as it doesn't like the cold as much. It only puts out 1-2 stems in summer. The stems can take over a year to turn black. It's a beautiful bamboo species and well worth the wait though.

Planted: 2016

Fertiliser or Organics Used: Balanced acid lovers alternating with organic chook manure pellets. Little and often.

Grumichama - Black (Seedling) 6/10

Amanda's Edible Fruits
Update: 2307 days 11hrs

Comments: - I love the flavour of these fruits but the seed to flesh ratio is too high for them to be anything more than a novelty fruit, at this stage. I suspect the species is chill-sensitive as it gets the winter yellows (chlorosis) when the overnight temps are <8C and the days are bright and sunny. They also do not like lime and need alkalinity managed in soils that are more alkaline than neutral and/or irrigation water that also has higher levels of calcium carbonate (lime).
They only fruit once per season here. They need plenty of water in sharply draining soils. They seem to prefer some afternoon shade in our hot WA summers also.

Mulberry - Black English (Cutting) 8/10

Pat1's Edible Fruits
Update: 4365 days 6hrs

Comments: -

I have no idea what variety of black mulberry I have but they are absolutely massive and I have never seen any bigger.  Mine was grown from a cutting given by a friend.  I hack the tree back every year after fruiting and bend down all the fruiting wood in winter to keep it at picking level.  They are so yummy when cooked and juiced.  So low maintenance and prolific!

Passionfruit - Select Black (Grafted) 9/10

Pat1's Edible Fruits
Update: 4365 days 6hrs

Comments: -

i am a big fan of passionfruit juice.  I had the Nellie Kellie vine for 5 years and it produced around 600 fruits every year before it died.  It likes lots of feed and water and hand pollination will enhance fruit set and fruits full of pulp.  Totally yummy when juiced.  Also taste fantastic with Miracle fruit!

Question:

How do I get this tree to set fruit,I have tried nearly everything fro fertilising to even threatening by giving a harsh prune but it just grew better and produced more flowers to fall.

I have a bore so it gets regular water varied fertiliser regime too, the longan on one side and the mangoes on two sides have all fruited well, my banana five meters away are producing for the second time, HELP

ps I live in Connolly a northern Perth suburb.

Mulberry - Black English 8/10

Itdepends1's Edible Fruits
Update: 4829 days 10hrs

Comments: -

Purchased this in 2008 as I enjoy mulberries but don't have the room left in the yard for a full sized tree. Growing this in half a wine barrel will keep the tree dwarfed and I'll still get a "taste" of fruit off it.

Reasonably heavily pruned due to being in pot

Update 2012 the Black English has been planted in the ground- replacing my dwarf red shatoot as it tastes much better than the dwarf red (they are too sweet for me) and it's an excellent flavour. Doesn't fruit as heavily as my seedling mulberry but tastes better.

Mulberry - Black Shahtoot? (Cutting)

BJ11_old_address's Edible Fruits
Update: 4864 days 9hrs

Comments: -

A cutting from a tree growing wild on an undeveloped block I hope to nurture this plant and put it in the naturestrip. The fruit are delicious (although nothing beats the Black English) and the parent plant has survived years of neglect and no water in unimproved soil (at least 10 metres above the water table) so the cutting should be tough! I'm planning on espilaring it against the fence (in a pot) and keeping a close eye on the berries to prevent paver stains.

Maybe my husband won't notice!

From a 10cm cutting in November 2010 it is now 1m high in October 2011 and covered in fruit. Clearly a tough weed (that will never be released from a pot!) By Jan 2012 it has its second crop of fruit (I've not seen such a thing before) and is 1.5m high. This plant is a weed!! I intend to plant it out on the verge come autumn as it cannot stay in the pot (it will stain pavers and grows too quickly).

May 2012 - the plant has put on MORE berries ... and been relocated to the verge. It was pruned heavily to assist with shape and root growth (as vandals killed the mango previously on the verge - although there are thorny roses planted around the mulberry to discourage this!). The prunings have been turned into about 20 cuttings. Plant is recovering well and hopefully will soon realised that cropping from spring to winter is a bit keen!!

Pollination: Cross Pollination

BJ you've got to see and try my black mulberry. They are massive and taste delicius esp when cooked. I also juiced them this year and it was totally yum!
