My Edible Fruit Trees: Fig Trees
Brown Turkey Fig 10/10![]() Update: 4966 days 10hrs Comments: - I have two brown turkey figs. Both are in pots. One is having developing figs while the other was thought dead till it started to produce green buds and now leaves. Am very very estatic that it is alive and glad that I did not give up and bin it...It is from Fleming's nursery. The other one is just another brown turkey fig tree from a normal nursery and was much cheaper. However, this brown turkey tree did far better than the Fleming's in terms of growth/development and in fact figs from both trees taste equally good. Fruiting Months January, October, November, December Planted: 2009 Growing: In a Pot Fruit Harvest: 10 Fruit Per Year Sun/Shade: Medium Sun Water Given in: Spring SpringPollination: No Fertiliser or Organics Used: Worm poo, homemade compost, seasol When I Fertilise: When Fruiting and Winter Pest Control: No sprays but netting done to deter birds. figLiz's Edible FruitsUpdate: 5736 days 3hrs Comments: - Another legacy from past owners - it's a white fig of some sort, and very nice! (It would be taller, but it's near power lines and I have to give it a fairly vicious pruning every few years... which also helps to keep the fruit in reach.) fig 8/10BJ11_old_address's Edible FruitsUpdate: 4757 days 19hrs Comments: - Rescued (a friend didn't want the plant anymore) as a dormant pot-bound plant that had never fruited. I pruned it within an inch of its life and it seems much happier now. I'm hoping I'll get fruit next year. leaves emerge in August / September. There only appears to be a single fruit. But oh, the taste of that little fruit ... divine! As a kid I used to eat wild figs by the river, and I've eaten shop figs, but this is so much yummier. Unfortunately I often forget to water the pot in the summer ... so perhaps that is a factor. I really need to figure a better location for this plant. The fig only gets washing machine run off, but it still really needs to be planted rather than in a pot - I'm hoping to plant it in a soak-well when I build a vegetable patch (so worms can move in and out but roots are trapped). It will be used to shade summer sun near the laundry door. I am yet to figure the ideal spot - additional water has resulted in a few more fruit but it doesn't seem to be doing much. I have added worms from the worm farm. I'm going to release this guy onto the farm (a friend wants a small fig on their rural property). I cannot put him in the ground and he's not a "pretty" feature in the pot so I'd rather he had a bit more attention and I could plant somethign I use more. Very tasty, but hidden out the back so I'd rather see it go somewhere appreciated. Planted: 2009 Height 2 metres Growing: In a Pot Qty: 1 Sun/Shade: Full Sun Water Given in: Winter Pollination: Self Pollination Pest Control: None Question: How can I find out what type of fig this is? Was this review helpful? Yes | No | Report 2 of 5 people found this review useful CommentsBrad1 says... [5390 days 24hrs ago]the fruit will most likely identify it. Most likely it was a cutting, rather than seed growing, so it should be good. If not, you can graft figs or start new from cuttings. I'm growing on a couple varieties, but they're still tiny* You need your own My Edibles Page to contribute Quick & Easy |

fig (Cutting)![]() Update: 5745 days 7hrs Comments: - This could be the latest style in marketing fresh fruit. Fig - black Genoa (Grafted) 9/10Birdybooo1's Edible FruitsUpdate: 4624 days 5hrs Comments: - My partner bought me this fig tree. It gave us 5 fruits in its first year but I had to remove it to relief any stress caused during transplant. It lost all its leaves during winter but is showing sign of new growth now that spring is close. We put it in the ground and will be planning on pruning it to give a compact easy to manage tree as space is a limiting factor in our garden. Other than the dog, it doesn't seem to have issues with pest. We give it plenty of manure and have grown it directly in the space where our compost bin used to be, hopefully the soil around the area received plenty of nutrients of the bin in previous years. Update after winter: Lots of fruit like buds and leaves. Fruiting Months February, May, June, July Planted: 2012 Height 1.1 metres Growing: In the Ground First Fruited: 2 Months from Purchase in Pot Sun/Shade: Medium Sun Water Given in: Autumn and Spring Pruned By: 20% in Autumn and Winter Pollination: Self Pollination Fertiliser or Organics Used: Manure and power feed When I Fertilise: When Fruiting Organic Status:Organic Was this review helpful?
