Irish Strawberry Tree - arbutus canariensis

Kathy2's Edible Fruits
Update: 5116 days 18hrs

Comments: -

Summer 2010: This one was a gift from my sister. She picked it cause it sounded interesting (and she knew I didn't already have it!).

The flowers are pretty but it hasn't fruited yet. It does have lovely bright green new growth.

Spring 2011: lots of new growth. Since spring started it has doubled in volume!

Summer 2011: I don't think that it likes all the rain. Getting brown patches on the inside of a lit of the folliage. Fingers crossed the weather warms up soon.

Summer 2012: The browning has stopped but the growing tips were all getting droopy. I decided not to cut them off just in case and it paid off cause there was nothing wrong with them - they were flowering!!!

Planted: 2010

Height 0.75 metres

Growing: In a Pot

Qty: 1

Sun/Shade: Medium Sun

Water Given in: Spring

Pollination: No

Fertiliser or Organics Used: Dynamic Lifter, Seasol, Charlie Carp, worm juice (in rotation)

Pest Control: Ants seem to be farming some sort of GINORMOUS fat black bloated scale things on the hardened off branches (just where the leaves come out). I picked as many off as I could and then sprayed it with pest oil.

Naranjilla (Seedling) 10/10

Sean1's Edible Fruits
Update: 5198 days 1hrs

Bought this in August 2011in a 140mm pot , it was about 200mm high. Now (early Nov2011) it is about 900mm high & very attractive. In a pot in azalea mix, doing very well thanks to all the tips from Daleys customers.(shaded spot) I'll probably get another one to increase pollination but even if it doesn't fruit it's a striking looking plant. Surprised it isn't grown just as a feature plant. Very happy.

Lots of flowers over summer but no fruit, has sent up 2 suckers

Naranjilla (Seedling)

Daniuel's Edible Fruits
Update: 5634 days 21hrs

Comments: - Grew very quickly. Very spiky leaves and multiple stems. Flowering since mid-summer but has not set fruit yet. Daleys told me it can flower for months before it actually sets fruit. I look at it every day to see if the first fruit has arrived. 6 months llater it is still flowering like crazy but still not one fruit has set. Plant is vigorous and healthy - looks very happy where it is.

Pest Control: None, and something is eating the leaves.

first year in ground. Very fast grower and fruiting already. Look at the size of these plants.  They've beared the high 30's degree C quite well. I'm talking 35 to 37 deg for days on end. This var hasn't got as many spikes or should I say, the spikes are no where near as large as the other Naranjlla I obtained from another source.
