My Edible Fruit Trees: Grape Vines WA
Grape - Crimson Seedless (Cutting) 8/10Pat1's Edible FruitsUpdate: 4356 days 3hrs Comments: - This seedless variety is very vigorous and the fruits are large and sweet and crunchy with good flavour. My favourite grapes so far. Grapes are hard work with all the pruning and spraying required. And then you have to protect the fruit from birds and rats. Still, the quality fruit is worth it. My vines are cane pruned. Fruiting Months March, April, May First Fruited: 36 Months from Purchase in Pot Sun/Shade: Full Sun Pollination: Self Pollination Question: The flowering seems to be unpredictable. Some years it flowers heaps and other years very little. Some first year canes will produce flower shoots while other first year canes won't. I still cannot figure it out. Grape - ruby seedless (Cutting)![]() Update: 5698 days 16hrs Comments: - Planted on the 18th November this year, in a pot next to my pergola. Hoping that it will grow up the side and at least cover some of the top, as I have no cover because they keep getting torn off by the wind. Planted: 2009 Height 50 Centimetres Growing: In a Pot Qty: 1 Sun/Shade: Full Sun Water Given in: Spring Pollination: Self Pollination Was this review helpful? Yes | No | Report 3 of 5 people found this review useful CommentsDiana says... [5696 days 15hrs ago]Hi Mish, I love your pergola. Grapes are excellent for growing over a pergola, as they have dense, large leaves in summer and they don't tend to drop the leaves during the growing season, also they live a long time. It feels about 5 degrees cooler when I walk under my grape from another part of the garden. Diana.Brad1 says... [5695 days 15hrs ago] If you want it to get up on the pergola, consider how you might encourage it to get there. e.g. how many stalks / branches do you need? I'd prune any you don't. e.g. maybe keep 3 or 4 only , 1 or 2 to go up, 1 left, 1 right. When they are in place you can tip prune to get branching. A framework you designed should make later pruning for fruit easier. Alternatively if you want it to spread through the wire, you could spread out the branches on it and tip prune often.* You need your own My Edibles Page to contribute Quick & Easy |
grape - thomuscatBJ11_old_address's Edible FruitsUpdate: 4975 days 6hrs Comments: - The thomuscat is supposed to be a white, seedless grape which is a cross between a sultana and white muscat, but with a strong muscat flavour (yummy ... I hope). It is supposed to mature early to mid-season. I planted it to screen the fence between my lime and orange. It appears to be more interested in growing up rather than out (which is fine). It was just a little stick when I planted it in early 2010. It is planted so that it is near a limestone retaining wall - which seems to keep it happy despite my attempts to acidify the soil in the bed (as there is a lime tree about 1.5 metres from the grape). the 2011-2012 crop was split by a late rain. The plant otherwise seems very happy and growing like a weed Planted: 2012 Height 1.5 metres Growing: In the Ground Qty: 1 Sun/Shade: Medium Sun Water Given in: Spring Pollination: Self Pollination Pest Control: Not required at this time Was this review helpful? Grape - Wortley Hall (black muscat) (Cutting) 10/10Amanda19's Edible FruitsUpdate: 5875 days 10hrs Comments: - Personally - black muscats are my favourite grape - I love squeezing the jelly-like inside out..yummm. This vine is great - no trouble, does well on the coast and in the wind, heat etc. It produces 3kg-plus bunches and lots of them. Much less hassel than the italian white muscat next to it. Grapefruit - Thompson Pink (Grafted)3's Edible FruitsUpdate: 5118 days 17hrs Comments: - This is a sport of the common Marsh grapefruit variety, differentiated from its parent by its pinkish coloured flesh and seedlessness. Apparently the pink colour only develops under ideal growing conditions and I am not sure that it will receive enough heat in our garden. The taste is similar to Marsh. This tree is part of our citrus hedge - a row of citrus trees planted along a north-west facing boundary fence at 1m spacing. The plan is for the trees to grow into an effective hedge that will be kept pruned to about 2m high. We prepared the planting area for the citrus hedge by incorporating "fruit & veg" soil mix into our existing sandy soil. Mushroom compost was worked into the bottom of the planting hole which was then backfilled with more "fruit and veg" mix. The area was lightly mulched with mushroom compost, leaving the area about 8cm around the trunk clear.
