Guava Hawaiian - Pink Supreme (Cutting) 8/10

Edward3's Edible Fruits
Update: 358 days 21hrs

Comments: -

Produces plenty of very tasty fragrant fruit with a mix of sweet with a hint of sour.

Extra bonus - chewing of young leaves are an excellent remedy for diarrhea and stomach bugs. Well known remedy in Asia.

Too much trouble with fruit fly, and fruit bats and rats so have removed this tree to make room for others.

Fruiting Months May

Planted: 2008

Height 2 metres

Growing: In the Ground

Qty: 1

Fruit Harvest: 50 Fruit Per Year

First Fruited: 6 Months after I planted Cutting

Sun/Shade: Medium Sun

Pruned By: 20% in

Pollination: Self Pollination

When I Fertilise: Spring

Pest Control:

Initially sprayed against fruit fly, but now prefer to use plastic bags over fruit which is close to ripening and it seems to work well.

Update: 1201 days 21hrs

Very Happy with the guava tree, Planted in 2018 started fruiting 2020, had few issues with fruit flies ( worms in fully ripen fruits) . Tried putting fine net bags around the fruits when they were young and voila didnt have the worm issue in those fruits..

Has started fruiting again this year planning to buy a huge net bag to cover the tree and tie it( too many fruits to be putting individual bags)!

Fruiting Months January, February, March, December

Growing: In the Ground

Sun/Shade: Full Sun

Pest Control: fruit fly  ( fine net bags used)

Guava - Mexican Cream 8/10

Edward3's Edible Fruits
Update: 1605 days 7hrs

Comments: - Very good soft sweet taste, sweeter than Hawaiian pink. Good crop. However, too much trouble with fruit fly, bush rats and fruit bats, so have removed tree to make room for others.

Fruiting Months March and April

Planted: 2014

Height 1 metres

Growing: In the Ground

Qty: 1

Fruit Harvest: 10 Fruit Per Year

First Fruited: 1 Years from purchase in pot

Sun/Shade: Full Sun

Water Given in: Autumn

Summer

Pollination: Self Pollination

Pest Control: Tried using vegemite solution in soft drink bottle to trap fruit flies but not completely effective. One spray with lebaycid worked very well but this chemical no longer used. Fine netting works well but does not stop bush rats.

Initially I had it in a pot and the top half died. So I put it in the ground and it recovered, and that's when I got 1 fruit. It seems to be very happy now and is growing well.

Guava - Strawberry 7/10

Davewastech's Edible Fruits
Update: 2054 days 7hrs

Strawberry Guava aka Cherry Guava aka Cattley Guava (Psidium cattleyanum)

A good "grazing" shrub when fruit are ripening. Quite ornamental, suited as a screen. Planted one of the red and one of the yellow fruited Strawberry Guavas. The yellow (photo) suffers from Qld fruit fly, but so far the red is less affected. So I'd say the red is a better shrub. ( I'll eventually get rid of the yellow)

Taste of reds vary a bit - I know of a red in somebody's yard with bigger and much yummier fruits than others I've tried, but the Qld ff think it's yummier too.

So I would give the yellow a Satisfaction rating of 3. The red I'd give 6. And if I could find one of the big yummy kind then that would be a 9.

It is classed as a weed in wet sub-tropics and wet tropics.

Update Sept 2018 - the yellow one is gradually becoming sicker looking - probably time to dig it out shortly. The red one looks fine.

Fruiting Months February and March

Planted: 2012

Height 1.5 metres

Growing: In the Ground

Qty: 2

Fruit Harvest: 1 kilograms per Year

First Fruited: 2 Years from purchase in pot

Sun/Shade: Medium Sun

Water Given in: Summer

After Fruiting

Pollination: Self Pollination

Fertiliser or Organics Used: NPK

When I Fertilise: Yearly

Pest Control:

The yellow suffers from fruit fly, so I use a big mosi net over it.

But so far the red doesn't need anything.

I have three plants growing at the moment trained as espaliers. One is trained as an informal, the second one is simple horizontal and the last one is a variation of the simple horizontal. It's my way of expressing myself.
