Black Sapote - Superb (Grafted) 7/10Edward3's Edible FruitsUpdate: 359 days 11hrs Comments: - Needed a second black sapote to aid in pollination. The specimen from Daley's looked rather weak and spindly and is extremely slow growing in part shade. However, first fruit (just one) in 2013 was delicious, so this variety definitely passes the taste test.Have now bought a second plant from Daley's as I am convinced it's needed for cross pollination for the large seedling tree. But the grafted trees are growing extremely slowly. One of the grafted trees suddenly dropped its leaves and died. Somewhat puzzling, but, growing close to the large seedling black sapote, it might not have been able to compete for water. Bought one more grafted tree in 2018 and planted in a different location where it won't have to compete with other trees. This time it is growing well. However, 5 years later still not getting any fruit. Flowers drop off. Fruiting Months December Planted: 2010 Height 1.5 metres Growing: In the Ground Qty: 2 Sun/Shade: Full Sun Water Given in: Spring SpringPollination: Self Pollination When I Fertilise: Spring Pest Control: Need to protect leaves from being eaten by possums when tree is young. Black Sapote (Seedling) 8/10Edward3's Edible FruitsUpdate: 2493 days 9hrs Comments: - Has flowered profusely for several years, but not much fruit set. Hence I planted a second variety of black sapote more recently and this seems to have helped with fruit set. In 2014 the tree had many flowers but the second variety had no flowers (still small tree), and again there was no fruit set, So it does seem that cross pollination is essential for the seedling tree. Fruiting Months December Planted: 2007 Qty: 1 Fruit Harvest: 5 Fruit Per Year First Fruited: 2013 Years from purchase in pot Pollination: Cross Pollination Cross Pollinator Variety: superb Was this review helpful? Black Sapote - Chocolate 6/10Kathy2's Edible FruitsUpdate: 4470 days 14hrs Comments: - He flowers like a bandit prefering flowers to new leaves. If you pull the flowers off you can force leave growth. New leaves are easily damaged by the cold and the wind can easily knock older leaves off. He responds well to tip pruning and loves to be fertilised. 2009: He was in the ground for 2 years before moved him into a pot to move house. I just watered him well the night before and seasoled him once he was in the pot. Then because it was then end of Spring (getting HOT!) I watered him every evening for a fortnight to make sure he didn't go into shock. 2010: Covered in flowers this year and I'm hoping for fruit! Spring 2011: Having gotten a little worried that I haven't had fruit-set despite years of flowering I did a little bit of research. Looks like either I am being impatient, I have a boy, or an infertile boy/girl. Poop! If there is no fruit-set this year I will look into getting a second, grafted - between the two I would HAVE to have pollination?? Summer 2011: We have flowers. There seems to be a big one in the centre of each cluster and smaller ones around... fingers crossed! Planted: 2007 Height 2 metres Growing: In a Pot Qty: 1 Sun/Shade: Medium Sun Pollination: No Fertiliser or Organics Used: chicked poo, seasol, charlie carp, worm castings Pest Control: Have noticed very few pests. Occasionally gets some leaf boring insects = if a few leaves effected I usually just leave them as they don't seem to spread Small spiders spinning webs in new branches kills growing tips = get rid of webs Was this review helpful? Black SapoteMinky1's Edible FruitsUpdate: 4721 days 23hrs Comments: - Just ordered from Daleys should get it next week. Received and planted and is growing exceptionally well. A lot of new growth, all I do is make sure it gets lots and lots of water. Unfortunately my son has decided to practice his pruning skills on my black sapote whilst I was hanging out the clothes. What was about 1.5m tall with a massive amount of new growth is now only under 0.5m with a couple of leaves. I don't know if this little guy is going to make it. Let's just say I was very, very upset with my son for this. September 2010 - new growth starting to come from stick that was left - this guy is a fighter. Has grown sigificantly over summer and is now growing more laterally than in height - lots of branches.
