Orange - Joppa (Grafted)

VF's Edible Fruits
Update: 27 days 9hrs

Comments: -

Supposed to develop into a small, attractive tree.  Bought this variety as tolerates wind. (Planted on exposed side of steep hill - growing beautifully). The fruit are tasty and juicy, a little seedy - fruit tastes like the drink "Tang"!  Does need watering if it hasn't rained for a few weeks (generally winter).

Growing: In the Ground

Qty: 1

Fruit Harvest: 3 Fruit Per Year

First Fruited: 6 Months from Purchase in Pot

Sun/Shade: Full Sun

Water Given in: Winter

Pollination: Self Pollination

Fertiliser or Organics Used: Manure and citrus feed

When I Fertilise: Yearly

Have used white oil spray once for scale.

Orange - Lanes Late (Grafted) 8/10

Selfsufficientme's Edible Fruits
Update: 68 days 12hrs

Comments: -

I wanted to extend my orange season and I already had a Washington naval, which produced exceptional tasting and good sized fruit so I decided to give Lane's late a go and I wasn't disappointed.

The tree grew slow at the start but it has found its feet now and is doing well.

The fruit does mature slightly later than my other oranges, so it has helped to extend my orange season. Tastes great and juices well. Fruit set isn't prolific (unlike my Valencia) but I'm sure it will improve as the tree matures.

The tree itself is quite upright in growth and is just awesome in my backyard collection.

I live in a fruit fly prone area but the citrus are usually left alone and if stung the larva never develop - it also helps that the fruit ripening is through winter and the fruit fly numbers are lower.

I would definately recommend the Lane's late naval orange for the backyard.

Fruiting Months February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September

Planted: 2007

Height 3.5 metres

Growing: In the Ground

Qty: 1

Fruit Harvest: 30 Fruit Per Year

First Fruited: 2 Years from purchase in pot

Sun/Shade: Full Sun

Water Given in: Autumn

Pruned By: 10% in After Fruiting

Fertiliser or Organics Used: chicken and quail manure, some citrus commercial mix, some trace elements

When I Fertilise: Yearly

Pest Control:

This tree is largly pest free. Gets the occasional leaf miner, caterpilla, or aphid but nothing serious. If I ever do need to spray, I use a little white oil and sometimes pyrethrum but that's very rare.

Dwarf Orange - Navelina (Grafted)

Paula-f's Edible Fruits
Update: 132 days 13hrs

Comments: -

Had my one and only fruit off this about a month ago.  It's only been in for about a year, so I took 99% of the flowers off.....just wanted 1 for a taste.  Very nice orange, but probably not as "orangy" as I would have liked.  Hopefully will get better with age.

Growing: In the Ground

Qty: 3

First Fruited: 1 Years from purchase in pot

Sun/Shade: Medium Sun

Pollination: No

Fertiliser or Organics Used: comfrey mulch, dynamic lifter, seaweed fert.

Pest Control:

Cterpillars which I usually pull off and squash.  If there is only one, I usually leave it if it's not doing too much harm as I love butterflies.

Blood Orange

ManishU's Edible Fruits
Update: 167 days 15hrs

Comments: -

Update 09-Dec-2011: Most of the tiny fruits have been nibbled by some insects. New pic attached.

Got a couple of fruits last season. The fruits were already forming when we got this from a nursery. But those fruits didnt have the blood red colour in the flesh that i was expecting. It was moderately sweet.

Its flowering again and i hope to get some blood oranges this time.

The idea of sweet honey like fruit sounded great. I have had berries now and have to say they tasted a bit unpleasant and like medicine :) Could be just me though. No sure if I will keep these because there is very little fruit to seed ratio.

Tamarillo - Orange (Cutting) 8/10

Paula-f's Edible Fruits
Update: 446 days 13hrs

Comments: -

Very easy to look after, although they love a good drink in hot weather and dislike being in a windy position, and they also like a bit of shade in the hot afternoon.

Cuttings are so easy to take, and the resulting tree ends up very productive.....within a year.  I I have found if I take the fruit off when it's just ripening, it dosen't seem to get stung by fruit fly.

I live in a sub tropical area, and am only able to grow the orange variety, but in winter the fruits do go a lot redder.

Fertiliser or Organics Used: horse manure, mushroom compost, bllod and bone and sugarcane mulch.

When I Fertilise: Spring

Pest Control:

The only thing that seems to affect the tree is aphids....but have also had 2 lovely trees about 2 metres tall, fall over......due to termites in the roots.

I  have found they are very short lived trees, and always have a couple of

The tree was here when we bought the house. Has fantastic fruit some of them the size of a newborn baby's head - no joke. Fruits on and off most of the year. The chooks live under it so is fertilized all the time. We have to watch it carefully when heavily laden if it is too windy.
