Bizibee's Edible Fruits
Update: 172 days 17hrs

I bought this 2 years ago from a nursery and planted it in my front yard which is west facing with lots of sun.  I have clay soil and I dug a very deep and wide hole.  The I used a bag of dirt for roses mixed with cow manure.  Initially it did very well but 2years down the track, it seems to be struggling.  I have watered in seasol and sprinkled with citrus feed, to no availe.  Any suggestions?

Orange - Valencia

Ili's Edible Fruits
Update: 406 days 15hrs

Comments: - Although not the best orange for Melbourne, it is warmer where we are close to the bay so hope it will do ok.  Selected the valencia due to it's longer fruiting period and due to fruits ability to hang on the tree for several months when ripe.  I have also read it is more disease resistant than other oranges.

Fruiting Months January, February, March, April, September, October, November, December

Height 1.2 metres

Growing: In the Ground

Qty: 1

Sun/Shade: Full Sun

Pollination: Self Pollination

Fertiliser or Organics Used: Manure, compost and worm juice. Blood and bone mixed with gypsum. Dynamic lifter for fruit

Organic Status:Partially Organic

Question:

Is anyone growing valencias in Melbourne? Any comments on sweet or sour and how they are doing?

I have heard they do o and best to pick them about April as they get sweeter the longer they stay on the tree.

I was advised to fertilize citrus 3 times a year with manure. Mine are all thriving since I started this practice. You should be right for pollination.

Beris M's Edible Fruits

My orange tree is only one year old and I have only had one orange from it but the taste was beautiful. I dont know if its my imagination or not but home grown fruit and vegetables taste soooooooooooo much better. I am hoping for a few more oranges this year. I have two kumquats in pots doing well and I make spoon sweets (Greek), marmalade and liqueure from them. When my son was about four he used to love popping a kumquat into his little sisters mouths and watching their faces.  I also have a fig tree, also one year old, and I had about six yummy figs. Also good for jam and desserts or just to eat fresh.

Orange - Bergamot

Violet Cactus's Edible Fruits
Update: 903 days 16hrs

Comments: -

I bought this from Daleys because the citrus oil from these oranges is the unique flavouring ingredient in Earl Grey tea.

Also, you can't go wrong with citrus trees - they are as ornamental as any tree, with their beautiful evergreen leaves and their pretty fruits and flowers, not to mention the lovely perfume of the flowers.

It has not fruited yet but is doing okay considering I had to squeeze it into a darish corner of the garden as I don;t have enough room! I would rather have planted it in full sun as it deserves.

Have you had a fruit yet? Is this orange edible like normal oranges or only good for its oils? I am wondering if you can use it to make your own kind of Earl Grey by adding the rind to tea?
