Kath's Edible Fruits
Update: 21 days 5hrs

Comments: -

A lovely dense compact tree, I grow it in a row with dwarf citrus.  Beautiful scented flowers int he spring followed by high quality fruit.  Easy to peal, large juicy oranges.

Planted: 2003

Growing: In the Ground

First Fruited: 3 Years from purchase in pot

Sun/Shade: Full Sun

Pollination: Self Pollination

Pest Control:

I have problems with Californian red scale on this tree, it was saved from a cheap reject bin during the drought.   I spray with eco oil and I have cut it back hard to produce a flush of vigorous new growth.

Update: 29 days 16hrs

Had my one and only fruit off this about a month ago.  It's only been in for about a year, so I took 99% of the flowers off.....just wanted 1 for a taste.  Very nice orange, but probably not as "orangy" as I would have liked.  Hopefully will get better with age.

Cterpillars which I usually pull off and squash.  If there is only one, I usually leave it if it's not doing too much harm as I love butterflies.

Orange - Valencia

BJ's Edible Fruits
Update: 34 days 14hrs

Comments: -

Planted in a raised bed and pruned as a standard the older leaves often look a little dull, I've piled poo around it and added specialised fertiliser ... but it just seems a bit lack-luster. Hopefully it will soon obtain the zest for life. It is flowering - but doesn't seem to put on loads of lush new growth.

Approximately 2 months after the poo episode and some extra loving ... this plant is covered in flowers and new growth. I think WA soil (even improved) just does not have the nutrients many plants require and additional compost etc is requried

This plant suffered in summer with only a small amount of watering. I've sinced discovered that WA citrus need approximately 6 litres of water per day per square metre of canopy and the orange has responded very well to an almost 7-fold increase in water! It is still very prone to disease and struggles after a few hot days, but it is going to make it.

In June 2011 I transplanted this tree into better soil. So far the transplant has gone well with no apparent stress.

It hasn't flowered that much in the summer of 2012 - lot of green leaves. Come autumn I think I'll re-improve the soil (pig poo?) I've mulched with sweet straw.

Thyme - orange

Kathy's Edible Fruits
Update: 40 days 22hrs

Comments: -

Autumn 2011: still has small leaves like normal thyme but completely different shape. Much lower growing. Had a beautiful orange and thyme fragrance (as the name suggests). It's not big enough to harvest yet but I am keen to cook with it. Smells beautiful.

Because my normal thyme doesn't like competition from other ground covers I have put this one in the pot with the ice cream bean where it will act as living mulch.

Update 09-Dec-2011: Most of the tiny fruits have been nibbled by some insects. New pic attached.

Got a couple of fruits last season. The fruits were already forming when we got this from a nursery. But those fruits didnt have the blood red colour in the flesh that i was expecting. It was moderately sweet.

Its flowering again and i hope to get some blood oranges this time.

Update: 69 days 18hrs

I bought this 2 years ago from a nursery and planted it in my front yard which is west facing with lots of sun.  I have clay soil and I dug a very deep and wide hole.  The I used a bag of dirt for roses mixed with cow manure.  Initially it did very well but 2years down the track, it seems to be struggling.  I have watered in seasol and sprinkled with citrus feed, to no availe.  Any suggestions?
