Feijoa BJ's Edible FruitsUpdate: 17 days 17hrs Comments: - Rescued from a throw-out these plants were very root-bound and dehydrated for about 4 years before being released into the ground in 2009. They have responded well to freedom and as of October 2010 are covered in flowers. In 2010 I was surprised to discover that these Bunnings seedlings do set the occasional fruit (albeit a bit bland). I'm hoping that the fruit improves a bit this year. Irrespective they purpose of these plants is to provide a hedge so the occasional edible fruit is just a bonus! That said, a named variety might be nice - especially if more fruit were provided (and tastier fruit). I could also practice grafting by taking cuttings to the original plants. I might remove / relocate strawberry guava and put in named feijoa. Jan 2012 - no fruit this year - but I intend to add some more feijoa to complete the hedge come autumn. They are a tough plant with interesting folige and stunning (tasty) flowers. May 2012 - an additional 6 tiny seedlings purchased to complete the hedge. The existing plants have produced a reasonable crop of somewhat grainy bubble-gum fruit. It makes good sorbet. Feijoa Kathy's Edible FruitsUpdate: 109 days 20hrs Comments: - Spring 2011: tried some of the fruit earlier in the year. Loved it and promised myself one of these this year! This one was a little bit sad (soil had been washed out of the top of the pot exposing the roots a little bit and he was on his way to being root-bound) but I think with some new potting mix and some lvoe he will be perfect. Summer 2011: New growth is a good sign but I am getting grew new growth at the growing tips and bright green at the base... it isn't supposed to be grafted????? :O) Those damned tiny leaf curling caterpillars are at the new growth on this one too. Too wet, can't spray, have to resort to manual termination! Planted: 2011 Height 60 Centimetres Growing: In a Pot Qty: 1 Sun/Shade: Medium Sun Pollination: No Was this review helpful? Feijoa - Triumph Paula-f's Edible FruitsUpdate: 132 days 16hrs Comments: - I finally have feijoas!!!!!! After being very patient and waiting over 5 years for my 3 Bunnings un-named seedlings to flower and fruit.......I gave up and pulled them out, and purchased one each of the mammoth and triumph grafted varieties. One (not sure which as I lost the labels) has fruited in it's second year and has about 5 fruit on. Will have to bag them shortly to keep the pesky fruit fly out. Feijoa (Seedling) Cam's Edible FruitsUpdate: 385 days 18hrs Comments: - I first tasted this fruit at work when my colleague brought it in from her home garden. The sweetness and slight tartness of the fruit tastes very much like a typical guava, although less aromatic, the soft and platable seeds makes up for it. These plants tolerate semi-shade pretty well and is very ornamental when in flower as the crimson red colours contrasts with the dark green foliage. It also makes a nice hedge too. I am having a toss between planting a hedge of lavenders or feijoas on the side fence of my front yard. Or should I interplant? Decisions, decisions. Feijoa (Seedling) 7/10 Deva's Edible FruitsUpdate: 436 days 20hrs Comments: - I like the taste. It tastes like guava which I ate a lot as a kid in my country as we had a hugh tree. Fruiting Months January, February, March, December Planted: 2008 Height 1.8 metres Growing: In the Ground Qty: 1 First Fruited: 3 Years from purchase in pot Sun/Shade: Full Sun Pollination: Self Pollination When I Fertilise: When Fruiting Pest Control: othing done so far Organic Status:Organic Question: I have 4 plants. One is 1.8 metre high and it has about 10 - 15 fruits in it first time. Others are very small but 1 tree has only 1 fruit. What is the best time to prune so that it grows upto 1.5 metres high and then branch out. I had a tree like a bush in New Zealand but it never had any fruit for sometime. Oneday I cut some branches only to reduce the area that it was occupying. To my surprise the following year we had a lot of fruits but most of them fell off due to wind (windy Wellington). Some one asked me to put a net under the tree so that they can be collected without soil. Was this review helpful?
