Figbarron's Edible Fruits
Update: 3183 days 1hrs

Comments: - Got this unknown specimen on eBay. I originally had 2 but one died as it was rootbound although planting in a larger container did not seem to help. The other one is happily growing in Osmocote premium potting mix i have since added some, chicken pellets and some blood and bone as the pre-added fertilizer is about to run out. It has growin really well even during the winter. I am hoping for some fruit next year and will continually update on its progress

Feijoa (Seedling)

Cam's Edible Fruits
Update: 5171 days 24hrs

Comments: -

I first tasted this fruit at work when my colleague brought it in from her home garden. The sweetness and slight tartness of the fruit tastes very much like a typical guava, although less aromatic, the soft and platable seeds makes up for it.

These plants tolerate semi-shade pretty well and is very ornamental when in flower as the crimson red colours contrasts with the dark green foliage. It also makes a nice hedge too. I am having a toss between planting a hedge of lavenders or feijoas on the side fence of my front yard. Or should I interplant? Decisions, decisions.

Question:

I have 4 plants. One is 1.8 metre high and it has about 10 - 15 fruits in it first time. Others are very small but 1 tree has only 1 fruit. What is the best time to prune so that it grows upto 1.5 metres high and then branch out. I had a tree like a bush in New Zealand but it never had any fruit for sometime. Oneday I cut some branches only to reduce the area that it was occupying. To my surprise the following year we had a lot of fruits but most of them fell off due to wind (windy Wellington). Some one asked me to put a net under the tree so that they can be collected without soil.

Variety not known, but the typical one most gardens have in the area.  Just one fruit was produced in Autumn 2009, and it was delicious.

Very drought tolerant, it has an upright columnar habit with leaves that grow vertically, turning their silvery undersides towards the strongest light to protect itself.  The flowers are gorgeous, something like a passionfruit crossed with a fushia, red and cream in colour.

We're keeping it at about 2 m high, but they can get to 6 m or so if you let them go.  The fruit is ripe when it drops from the tree.  The birds haven't discovered the joys of them, thankfully, but the tree is netted anyway.

I'm looking forward to a much bigger harvest this coming autumn.

Very similar performance to the Mammoth, but doing slightly better.

UPDATE 2014: Stacks of fruit off these trees. Perform better if they get afternoon shade in Melbourne as the summers are harsh.
