My Edible Fruit Trees: Kiwifruit Vines nsw
Kiwifruit Gold Seedling (Seedling)![]() Update: 322 days 7hrs Comments: - Fruit is sweeter than the green kiwifruit so decided to grow a seedling (grafted and cuttings not available). First flowers in 2018 turned out to be female. Also growing additional seedlings raised at home which flowered in 2019 - one with female and one with male flowers. Got some fruit in 2020 but lost to bush rats in spite of netting. As a matter of interest, flowering in golden kiwifruit is a few weeks earlier than for the greeen kiwifruit, so can't get cross pollination between these two varieties. Also, the seedling from Daleys flowered earlier than my seedlings and so failed to get pollinated. Planted: 2013 Height 2 metres Growing: In the Ground Qty: 5 Sun/Shade: Full Sun Water Given in: Autumn Pruned By: 40% in Summer Pollination: No Pest Control: Must protect from possums , bush rats and birds with netting. This is not working very well - the netting gets torn open, and I suspect the culprit is the bush rat. Was this review helpful? No idea if it will grow true. Height 1 Centimetres Growing: In a Pot Qty: 1 Sun/Shade: Full Shade Pollination: No Question: Any way to tell seedling gender, or must I wait for it to flower in a few years? Was this review helpful? Yes | No | Report 2 of 7 people found this review useful CommentsEdward3 says... [1624 days 14hrs ago]You have to wait for the flowers. I grew several golden kiwi seedlings from supermarket seeds. Of these two turned out to be female and one male. They pollinate successfully.* You need your own My Edibles Page to contribute Quick & Easy |
Kiwiberry (wild Kiwifruit) (Seedling) 8/10CoolClimate1's Edible FruitsUpdate: 4031 days 14hrs Comments: - I bought this because it's self fertile, small size, hairless fruit, and because I wanted an edible climber for one of our sheds. It's growing really well, deciduous in winter. Flowered spring 2011 and appears to have a few small fruit. Continued to fruit each year, not huge yields. Kids adore the fruit, even when it was "overripe" to my taste. Planted: 2010 Height 2 metres Growing: In the Ground Qty: 1 Water Given in: Winter Pollination: No Fertiliser or Organics Used: Sheep manure When I Fertilise: Spring Was this review helpful? Kiwifruit - Male![]() Update: 4860 days 11hrs Comments: - Very vigorous! You could very nearly watch him and see him growing! Make sure that you keep him under control. He doesn't have to be enormous to get his job done. I would like to try grafting a female to him and get double bang for my pot space but I don't know anyone with a female vine. Anyone in Newcastle willing to offer me a piece next time they prune? Spring 2011: No flowers this year. Very cross! I got flowers on the kiwiberry but nothing on the male. I am thinking that I will graft a piece of her onto him next year and maybe her hormones will encourage him to flower at the right time? Admitedly he might not be a dud, he might justbe too young? Planted: 2008 Height 1 metres Qty: 1 Sun/Shade: Full Sun Pollination: Cross Pollination Cross Pollinator Variety: it is the pollinator Was this review helpful?
