Zanthoxylum piperitum Japanese Pepper

Linton's Edible Fruits
Update: 992 days 22hrs

Comments: -

Zanthoxylum piperitum

Japanese Pepper

The Japanese Pepper Tree is a wonderful small tree, being highly ornamental and having most fragrant foliage. The leaves are highly aromatic and it is probably the only pepper tree where the leaves can be used in cooking as well as the berries.

Young fresh leaves are known as Kinome. Dried and powdered leaves are called Sansho. All edible parts of this species have a lemony aroma and undertaste. The Japanese Pepper tree is dioecious, so you need both a female and male tree to produce the pepper berries, but if you just need the leaves only 1 tree is required.

Tyalgum Purple Epiphyllum

Linton's Edible Fruits
Update: 1081 days 10hrs

Comments: - Tyalgum Purple is an extremely cold tolerant epiphyllum hybrid. The fruit contain a crisp spoonable flesh that is evocative of dragonfruit but with a stronger flavour and higher bix rating than dragonfruit. This plant is much more hardy than dragonfruit and being shade tolerant does not require full sun to set  fruit. I grow them in dry sandy soil in full shade.
