The Black Truffle originates in France, in the region of Perigord. It is very aromatic and is highly valued with chefs and restaurants. The vast majority of the truffles that are grown in Australia are this one. It is harvested typically from June through to the end of August. It has a black peridium (skin) and the glebra (fruit body) is black with thin white veins. The host tree is the deciduous English oak, Quercus robur, which produce acorns, and the roots of the tree are inoculated with truffle mycorrhiza. In Europe, truffles thrive in nutrient poor, calcareous (lime) soils and a temperate climate. Therefore to establish a truffiere in Australia you will require an area with a similar climate, including rainfall & winter frosts, sufficient available water for drought proofing, and apply sufficient lime to replicate the European soil types. Graham Richards kindly gave us this low chill Pluot Plum to trial from his low chill breeding program. First fruiting this season, excellent flavour and texture. A Pluot is a cross between an Apricot and Plum- however more Plum characteristics are present. The Black Adder has Purplish- black skin with an amber flesh turning a deeper colour when very ripe. Pluots normally require cross pollination to set fruit. Try cross pollinating with another Pluot or a Japanese Plum variety- like a Mariposa. We are currently assesing its ability to self pollinate and will update our growing advice with those results. Ensure adequate sunlight, free draining fertile soil for maximum yields and healthy productive trees. Being low chill, it will produce fruit where winters are mild but may still not thrive in areas with hot summers. Protection may be beneficial.

Fragrant, stunning flowers distinguish the Guiana Chestnut. Makes a beautiful landscape tree. Native to estuaries and lake shores in the tropical rainforests of Mexico, Central and South America The seeds have been recommended for eating eaten either raw or roasted, however recent research has indicated that there may be toxic compounds present that are not neutralised through cooking. When roasted or fried in oil they taste like chestnuts or cashews They have also been ground and used as a flour substitute when baking bread. The young leaves and flowers have also been cooked and eaten as a vegetable, however no mention is made of this in the research.It has also been suggested fungal organisms may be converting oils into inedible compounds. Production of nuts starts within a few years. The large, white, self-fertile flowers display spectacular clusters of 10cm cream-white stamens. The fruit is a woody green five-valved pod up to 30cm in length. The capsules that follow burst open when the seeds are ripe. The plant grows well in mild inland and coastal areas. The plant will tolerate brief exposure to low temperatures but won't tolerate frost. A frost-free location with some protection from hot, drying winds is the best choice for the plant. It will take full sun to partial shade. Malabar chestnuts are not overly fussy about soil as long as it is well drained. They are semi-deciduous. The flowers of the Guiana chestnut are spectacular, they emerge from foot long buds where they are almost hidden amongst the dense foliage. The long dark red brown coloured petals droop and disappear to show off the dramatic clusters of scarlet tipped stamens. The fruits that follow the flowers are football shaped large woody pods that can reach 30cm in length. The tightly packed nuts inside enlarge until the pods burst open to reveal them. The Guiana Chestnut does best in sites that are protected from drying winds, it can be grown in full sun or part shade and it requires frequent and generous watering. Minnie Royal cherry is a low chill producer of fruit with stand out flavour. It is a medium to large sized, red cherry with a firm texture. The tree is very productive and has been known to set heavy crops in southern California. Chill hours can be as low as 200 hours and does depend on micro climate. Fruiting can be as early as November. Minnie Royal requires a pollinator which has traditionally been the older Royal Lee variety but flowering times of these 2 can be mismatched in warmer areas and an intermediary is helpful. The newer, self pollinating Royal Crimson blooming can bridge between these two. Bees are the main pollinating insects, so plant flowering herbs to attract them to your garden. The Butia or Jelly palm yields a host of edible and useful products. They have large stalks of golden fruit in clusters. The fruit is green before it ripens, then turns golden, sometimes having a reddish tinge when ready to eat. Soft, tasty flesh surrounds a hard seed that looks like a miniature coconut. Simply peel the flesh away and eat it, prepare a soft puree, or use Butia Palm fruit in jelly. The taste is delicious and starts out like apple and transforms into tropical like flavours similar to an apricot/banana mix. Although delicious when eaten fresh they are most often preserved due to their stringy fibrous flesh. Jelly palm fruits are picked as they ripen. Yellow fruiting species with a distinctive sweet tangy flavour reminiscent of pineapple. We consider this tree a showpiece. Its lime green leaves have an unusual soft, almost powdery appearance and its beautiful golden green pendulous branches make it a worthy feature in the garden for its highly ornamental nature. The fruit of the black jaboticaba is becoming more popular and widespread (I even found some on the shelf of a local grocery store here in Lismore last week) while the yellow jaboticaba still remains a mystery to many. A prerequisite for enjoying the fruits of the Black Jaboticaba is patience. They can often take 6-7 years to come to fruit. However, we have found the Yellow Jabot produce fruit in as little as 3 years. It is a small bushy tree, usually growing to 3-4m in the subtropics of Australia, however I have seen photographs of the tree, in Brazil (its place of origin), with a couple of young boys perched high in the branches. These trees must have reached 9-10 m tall. The tree has a moderate cold tolerance but is best protected from frost. It is a suitable container grown tree in those areas that do receive frost and can be moved to a sheltered position during the cooler months. They are happy in full sun or part shade and are generally small enough to find a place in most gardens. They are relatively wind tolerant but will not enjoy salt spray. They particularly enjoy deep rich soil pH 5.5 to 6.5 but with regular nutrient application can be grown in most soil types. While the fruits have some similarities to the Black Jaboticaba, they are quite different in appearance, having a slightly furry yellow skin instead of the smooth shiny black skin. The fruit contains a gelatinous whitish pulp which has a pleasant, slightly acid flavor. A single tree will produce fruit, but cross pollination has shown to increase productivity. When planting a jaboticaba, the crown (uppermost) roots should be 2 to 3 inches higher than the surrounding soil levels to provide water runoff. Peat, compost or rotted manure may be mixed with the soil from the planting hole to improve it. The soil should be a well-aerated mixture.

The Black Truffle originates in France, in the region of Perigord. It is very aromatic and is highly valued with chefs and restaurants. The vast majority of the truffles that are grown in Australia are this one. It is harvested typically from June through to the end of August. It has a black peridium (skin) and the glebra (fruit body) is black with thin white veins. The host tree is the deciduous English oak, Quercus robur, which produce acorns, and the roots of the tree are inoculated with truffle mycorrhiza. In Europe, truffles thrive in nutrient poor, calcareous (lime) soils and a temperate climate. Therefore to establish a truffiere in Australia you will require an area with a similar climate, including rainfall & winter frosts, sufficient available water for drought proofing, and apply sufficient lime to replicate the European soil types. The best Japanese variety so far, it has deep orange flesh, high flesh/seed ratio and very sweet flavour. Earliest variety to ripen. Thinning fruit will enhance fruit size. The Nagasakiwase often has 2 crops a year in the subtropics. The first crop in April / May then again in August. We have found by cincturing in summer, the August crop has a much larger crop and better fruit size.

A tall growing deciduous tree with maidenhair like foliage. The foliage colours golden yellow in Autumn. The female tree bears a plum-like cone with an ill smelling flesh, but the kernel is edible and sweet. Slow growing and requires good soil and plenty of water during summer. We are not able to determine which seedlings are male or female until they flower so that is why we recommend 3 plants to be assured you will get at list one female.
