Grape - Carolina Black Rose 10/10

Diana's Edible Fruits
Update: 1547 days 11hrs

Comments: -

A fantastic shade plant, it looks beautiful. Does not go dormant until early August, and only for a month. About 15 bunches of grapes in it's first year, 30 second year, only six in its third year. I also have a Maroo seedless on an archway, which fruits about three weeks earlier than the Carolina Black Rose. Maroo seedless is sweet, Carolina Black Rose is quite sour.

Fruiting Months December

Planted: 2008

Height 3 metres

Growing: In the Ground

Qty: 1

Fruit Harvest: 5 kilograms per Year

First Fruited: 1 Years from purchase in pot

Sun/Shade: Full Sun

Pollination: Self Pollination

Fertiliser or Organics Used: occasional seaweed spray

Wow Diana, fabulous picture of your grapes. I also bought one from daleys and had it in the ground...first season. Do you happen to have more pictures of it? I would like to learn how you train it onto the roof? Can you send your pics to I am having a bit of headache how i can do it. It is grown against the patio support pole. Has it been disease free since you had it? The young new leaves of mine come out curling and distorted. Do you have any idea why it is like that? Thanks!
Diana says... [5225 days 7hrs ago]
Thanks, au0rey, I have answered your questions in the passionfruit thread of the forum.

Hi Diana, this spring my vine finally put on flower clusters and loads of them. I am sure yours do as yours seem to grow very similarly to mine, on the roof beams. Do you trim off any extra shoots so that fewer clusters can have better fruit development or do you just leave them alone? Thanks!
au0rey says... [4507 days 17hrs ago]
Hi Diana, can you tell me what colour your CBR grapes are when they first appear? If green, when do they turn black? And are your grapes oval or round when young? I have a funny feeling that mine may not be carolina black rose.
Diana says... [4504 days 21hrs ago]
Hi au0rey, I prune off excess growth of leaves and shoots during summer as it is very vigorous. The grapes start off green and go black when ripe. Mine are just starting to turn. I have a Maroo seedless (a seedless sibling of the Carolina Black Rose apparently), which is already all ripe. They are both pretty round.
au0rey says... [4504 days 18hrs ago]
Thanks Diana, hopefully mine will turn round and black and be CBR.

Vine lost its leaves in April , before any real cool weather. After a record Cairns winter with several nights down to 7c bud burst was slow, no sign of life till early October. Mid November, vine is growing vigorously and there are tiny flower clusters on 1/2 a dozen lateral shoots. Will it fruit in Cairns? watch this space!

All the flowers have fallen off now. Was it the 42c heatwave in late Nov or just that the vine is still too small ? Cordons are growing vigorously but only a handful of lateral buds have sprouted. Maybe next year?

What amazing vines these are. I bought them (2)as rooted cuttings and planted them on a 1.8m vine. Their first season theygrew past the top wire and then set a couple of small bunches of small seeded black grapes. During the last spring (2016) they set 48 large bunches of these small black grapes which I thinned by cutting the bunches in half so that the final fruit was larger. We are harvesting every couple of days. They are not table grapes but when chilled are very refreshing and very moreish.

Dec 2017 A small crop for this year to be expected after last year's

Grape - Sultana H5 (Cutting) 9/10

Slicko's Edible Fruits
Update: 2332 days 13hrs

Comments: -

I love this grape! Our neighbour grew it in Sth Australia and when we moved to Qld we grew a vine for some years before we lost it during building renovations. I brought these vines last year and they have boomed since they were planted. Yet to fruit but I expect to see a good crop next year.

April 2015: This variety seems to be a really vigorous grower and it has had no difficulty in sending out canes 4 metres or so long. The vines are almost dormant now and are soon to be cane pruned as spur prunning does not suit them

Dec 2017 No crop again this year ..  will try to graft another variety

Grape - Isabella Black (Cutting) 9/10

Slicko's Edible Fruits
Update: 2332 days 13hrs

I have grown this variety for about 20 years at my old home and love the fruit which is black and loved by the birds, crisp and sweet and it can be recommended for the lovely shade and privacy it gave us. So when we moved here I brought some cuttings with us.

I had been spur pruning them but his season I am going to cane prune them as they may crop better thiis way.

Jan  2017: Cane prunung seemed to work better.. The pic shows about half of our 2017 harvesr

Think I have same grape bought from Daley 25years ago. Have seen similar problem usually follows a wet spring so probably some form of mildew. Rob

Muscadine Grape - Adonis (Cutting)

Slicko's Edible Fruits
Update: 2659 days 17hrs

Comments: -

I bought  this Adonis Muscadine and a Nobel about 18 months ago and planted them alongside my 4 Vitus Vinifera on the same trellis. Both reached the top wire in short time and both produced fruit in their first season, the Noble a couple of small bunches of small black grapes of little flesh and quite a few seeds. The Adonis produced several bunches of large golden, sweet, seeded grapes, quite different from what we tend to expect with our Vitus Vinifera varieties. What I didn't expect was the Adonis would continue to flower and ripen these small bunches throughout the year!

What I learnt was that the Muscadines were rampant and after investigating I found out that in the lower eastern states of the US where they are native is that they need more room and a different trellising system from my other varieties. It seems that in the US they give the Muscadines 3m of trellis on each side often using a single wire set about 1.5-1.8m above the ground. They seem to be spur pruned and left with long cordons.

So my Muscadines have to be moved and I have room for only one plant so it does not take any imagination as to which one will survive the transitiion.
