Flacourtia (cape plum) 10/10 Glennis's Edible FruitsUpdate: 112 days 3hrs Comments: - I grow this native because it is a host plant for the australian rustic butterfly . The plant flushes with new growth most of the year and the butterflies hang around the garden most of the year . You need a bisexual one if you dont have male and female plants if you want fruit . It is a rainforest plant so it needs lots and lots of mulch . I read that jam is made from the fruit . The 2 large plants i have are not bisexual so will not have fruit . Thats ok because i bought a bisexual one but it will take 5 year to get big enough to fruit 3/2/2012 . Wongai Plum - Manilkara kauki (Seedling) 10/10 BJ's Edible FruitsUpdate: 157 days 13hrs Comments: - I dont mind Wongai fruit. the trees seem to grow okay in Brisbane. I have one in the ground and a few in pots, one of which seems very well adapted to our conditions. the one in ground is a slow and very compact, bushy grower. Very ornamental leaves, especially as they are thrown and open like a sheath. Plum - Gulfgold 9/10 Xhristofer's Edible FruitsUpdate: 336 days 22hrs Comments: - Red skin with gold flesh. Heavy cropping variety that tastes sweet and juicy. Simply delicious straight off the tree. Said to bare off older wood but will fruit off current years growth. In fact so much so that it will break the branches off from the weight of abundant fruit if not thinned. I tried to prune mine and through inexperience have made the tree more a spreading shrubby mess than anything else. But it still yields massive amounts of fruit for its size. A more upright tree would be easier to manage but, oh well. Davidsons Plum - QLD (Seedling) 6/10 Amethyst's Edible FruitsUpdate: 484 days 17hrs Comments: - Interesting foliage. I knew I was challenging nature when I planted this in mediocre soil with a full northerly aspect and moderate rainfall. However, to its credit, it has survived and slowly, slowly grown a litlle bigger. This season has been its best but it's proabably only put on 20cm if that! I will be waiting some time yet before it starts to flower. Wongai Plum - Manilkara kauki (Seedling) 10/10 Ettybay Exotics's Edible FruitsUpdate: 623 days 20hrs Comments: - This is a unique native Australian fruit tree with lots of other uses. It grows on poor soil on beach fronts of the islands of the Torres Strait. The fruit ripens in winter and tastes somewhat like a ripe date. The seeds make interesting ornaments and jewelery. The wood is extra hard and makes fine carving timber. Plum - Gulfgold Fred's Edible FruitsUpdate: 636 days 18hrs Comments: - This plant was about 1.5 metres, and it appears that 'something' has gone through and broken the plant to about 300 mm above the ground and the trunk of the broken is 30 mm thick - we are hoping it will live and reshoot. 5 March 2010 - looks like it has died - so will have to get another one to replace July 2010 - This tree has now grown from below the graft, and looks like it is a peach tree - waiting to see what kind of fruit we get. Plum - Satsuma (Grafted) 5/10 Kat Taylor's Edible FruitsUpdate: 646 days 24hrs Height 2 metres Growing: In the Ground First Fruited: 2 Years from purchase in pot Sun/Shade: Medium Sun Water Given in: Autumn Pollination: Self Pollination Fertiliser or Organics Used: Dynamic Lifter When I Fertilise: Spring Question: Last year had set fruit for the first time - only about 7 plums, but all dropped off. Is the small ameount of fruit likely due to age, or lack of a cross-polinator - it is supposed to be a self-polinating plum (I think it is a Satsuma). And would the fruit drop off due to insufficient watering, or is there any other reason? Was this review helpful?
