i transplanted a huge mature black grape vine thriving locally in north Brisbane, so I think it is a CBR. Grows extremely well and sets huge amounts of long bunches of grapes without much care other than pruning and training. Can transplant any time of the year, they will just wait until the following spring to rebound.

You are lucky to have this variety, Daleys won't ship grapes to QLD anymore. Let me know if you want to sell a cutting!

Grape - Carolina Black Rose 10/10

Diana's Edible Fruits
Update: 1970 days 21hrs

Comments: -

A fantastic shade plant, it looks beautiful. Does not go dormant until early August, and only for a month. About 15 bunches of grapes in it's first year, 30 second year, only six in its third year. I also have a Maroo seedless on an archway, which fruits about three weeks earlier than the Carolina Black Rose. Maroo seedless is sweet, Carolina Black Rose is quite sour.

Wow Diana, fabulous picture of your grapes. I also bought one from daleys and had it in the ground...first season. Do you happen to have more pictures of it? I would like to learn how you train it onto the roof? Can you send your pics to I am having a bit of headache how i can do it. It is grown against the patio support pole. Has it been disease free since you had it? The young new leaves of mine come out curling and distorted. Do you have any idea why it is like that? Thanks!
Diana says... [5648 days 17hrs ago]
Thanks, au0rey, I have answered your questions in the passionfruit thread of the forum.
au0rey says... [4997 days 2hrs ago]
Hi Diana, this spring my vine finally put on flower clusters and loads of them. I am sure yours do as yours seem to grow very similarly to mine, on the roof beams. Do you trim off any extra shoots so that fewer clusters can have better fruit development or do you just leave them alone? Thanks!
au0rey says... [4931 days 3hrs ago]
Hi Diana, can you tell me what colour your CBR grapes are when they first appear? If green, when do they turn black? And are your grapes oval or round when young? I have a funny feeling that mine may not be carolina black rose.
Diana says... [4928 days 7hrs ago]
Hi au0rey, I prune off excess growth of leaves and shoots during summer as it is very vigorous. The grapes start off green and go black when ripe. Mine are just starting to turn. I have a Maroo seedless (a seedless sibling of the Carolina Black Rose apparently), which is already all ripe. They are both pretty round.
au0rey says... [4928 days 4hrs ago]
Thanks Diana, hopefully mine will turn round and black and be CBR.

Currently in second year. Had some fruit last year 5-6 bunches of  5-30 grapes per bunch. Had to compete with ants for the ripe fruit. Fruit does not ripe at the same time on bunch therefore have to pick and eat individually. Very annoying all round. However the few that we got to taste were delicious and sweet. Did not know much about trellising or pruning. Could be reason why unproductive. Have been reading up about pruning, but not sure if the variety prefers spur pruning or cane pruning. Anyway, its too late for this year as I have giving the whole vine a very close haircut all round. Fingers crossed for fruit but will try more scientific pruning next year.

Fruiting Months December

Planted: 2007

Qty: 2

First Fruited: 1 Years after I planted Cutting

Sun/Shade: Medium Sun

Autumn and Winter

Fertiliser or Organics Used: chook poo

Pest Control:

Have sprayed fungicide (mancozeb) and eco-oil (mid winter) on bare branch as preventative.

Will try some ant sand around base of plant/trellis to prevent the ants from eating fruit before we do.

What amazing vines these are. I bought them (2)as rooted cuttings and planted them on a 1.8m vine. Their first season theygrew past the top wire and then set a couple of small bunches of small seeded black grapes. During the last spring (2016) they set 48 large bunches of these small black grapes which I thinned by cutting the bunches in half so that the final fruit was larger. We are harvesting every couple of days. They are not table grapes but when chilled are very refreshing and very moreish.

Dec 2017 A small crop for this year to be expected after last year's
