My Edible Fruit Trees: Fig Trees VIC
Brown Turkey Fig 10/10![]() Update: 4989 days 8hrs Comments: - I have two brown turkey figs. Both are in pots. One is having developing figs while the other was thought dead till it started to produce green buds and now leaves. Am very very estatic that it is alive and glad that I did not give up and bin it...It is from Fleming's nursery. The other one is just another brown turkey fig tree from a normal nursery and was much cheaper. However, this brown turkey tree did far better than the Fleming's in terms of growth/development and in fact figs from both trees taste equally good. Fig - black Genoa (Grafted) 9/10Birdybooo1's Edible FruitsUpdate: 4647 days 3hrs Comments: - My partner bought me this fig tree. It gave us 5 fruits in its first year but I had to remove it to relief any stress caused during transplant. It lost all its leaves during winter but is showing sign of new growth now that spring is close. We put it in the ground and will be planning on pruning it to give a compact easy to manage tree as space is a limiting factor in our garden. Other than the dog, it doesn't seem to have issues with pest. We give it plenty of manure and have grown it directly in the space where our compost bin used to be, hopefully the soil around the area received plenty of nutrients of the bin in previous years. Update after winter: Lots of fruit like buds and leaves. Fruiting Months February, May, June, July Planted: 2012 Height 1.1 metres Growing: In the Ground First Fruited: 2 Months from Purchase in Pot Sun/Shade: Medium Sun Water Given in: Autumn and Spring Pruned By: 20% in Autumn and Winter Pollination: Self Pollination Fertiliser or Organics Used: Manure and power feed When I Fertilise: When Fruiting Organic Status:Organic Was this review helpful? Fig Deanna (Cutting) 9/10![]() Update: 3137 days 1hrs Comments: - There were only two fig types at bunnings, brown turkey and black genoa and wanted a bit more variety. I purchased this 2 year old bare-root fig tree from an online eBay nursery. Its supposed to have light greenish-yellow flesh and a tasty pulp. Its currently growing in a cut 200L drum. The cut drum is self watering and promotes healthier root system through air pruining. The fig has just started to produce some foilage. Potting mix is the same as my other figs. 1:1:1 coconut coir, potting mix and compost mixed in with dynamic lifter. Planted: 2016 Height 0.8 metres Growing: In a Pot Qty: 1 Sun/Shade: Full Sun Water Given in: Winter Pollination: Self Pollination Fertiliser or Organics Used: Dynamic Lifter, blood and bone, nitrosol Organic Status:Organic Was this review helpful? Fig White Genoa (Cutting) 10/10![]() Update: 2986 days 20hrs Comments: - Saw this at bunnings and quickly snapped it up. It was purchased as an advanced tree (250mm pot) about 2 years old and about 1.2m tall. 3 weeks later it has about 16 figs growing on it. It has been transplanted in a 25L bucket in general potting mix ammended with compost, dolomite lime, sulphate of potash and dynamic lifter. I'll update on how the figs taste, size e.t.c. Update: The fruit is quite sweet, even sweeter if left for longer on the tree. The sie of the fig is around 85g in weight. The fruit are succeptible to splitting if it rains while they are on the brink of ripening. Great eating fig! Dwarf Fig - Brown (Cutting) 10/10![]() Update: 2986 days 20hrs Comments: - I purchased this fig in Late November and planted it in a 300mm pot with a protting mix of 30-30-30% coconut coir, compost and potting mix and mixed with organic fertilizer and some lime. Within 3 weeks it started to produce figs as well as push new growth. I will update on the taste of the figs and and growth behaviour. UPDATE: So it has fruited! The fruit is medium size and quite sweet. The tree itself has doubled in height and still growing despite it having fruit on it. Highly recommended! Fig - Brown Turkey![]() Update: 4195 days 19hrs Comments: - Struck from a sucker from a friend's tree around 1993. Took quite a few years to establish. I do nothing to it - water only in the hottest part of summer and has never been fertilised. Fruiting well last few years after a heavy prune to keep it under 2m ... and I now actually GET the fruit since I started netting it from the birds! Lovely fruit when dried. Fig - Brown Turkey (Cutting) 9/10![]() Update: 3137 days 1hrs Comments: - This was my first fig tree. I was tired of purchasing bland figs (that are picked too early) from the store so i decided to purchase some fig trees. This one was purchased from Bunnings who inturn got them from Humphries nursery. Potting mix is 30% coconut coir, 30%pootting mix and 30% compost. I mixed in with a handful of dynamic lifter and some blood and bone and planted it into a 300mm pot. Update (Oct 2016): The tree is rapidly growing and responds really well to charlie carp organic Planted: 2016 Height 0.7 metres Growing: In a Pot Qty: 1 Sun/Shade: Full Sun Water Given in: Spring Pollination: Self Pollination Fertiliser or Organics Used: Dynamic Lifter, nitrosol Organic Status:Certified Was this review helpful? [1195 days 5hrs ago]Hi Figbarron, Since you have variety of different figs, wanted to know how they both compare with the quality of fruit. I got a brown turkey (planted in ground) this year, but heard that it has the least tasty fruit of all figs. Don't want to waste time and effort on a fig that it mediocre. Got a white adriatic and violette de bordeaux this year as well (both kept in pots). Regards, Devang.Krzystof says...
