Only had one harvest so far, looking forward to the next..  Absolutely delicious. Small easily peeled fruit, Juicy as a lychee.  Refreshing slightly citrus flavour.  Have watered it while it established. No water since.  Fed it occasionally with some manure.  Plan to prune it so I can continue to reach the fruit. Seems like easy care, easy enjoy.

The Wampi/Wampee is an attractive, evergreen, slender tree and has been described as the finest fruit of Siam (Thailand). It is also a highly valued backyard tree in southern China and southeast Asia. It is classed as a subtropical / tropical fruit, but is relatively hardy and can withstand light frosts.

This tree is a relative of the citrus family, thus its ability to grow in coastal Australia as far south as Melbourne and inland where the frosts are not too severe.

The fruits are highly aromatic and can be sweet to tangy to almost sour depending on the variety and ripeness. Straight from the tree, Wampee are very refreshing, thirst quenching and cleansing to the palate. They grow in clusters from a few up to eighty in one bunch.

The fruits turn yellow when ripe and have a thin, sometimes brittle skin, somewhat like paper. They generally have only 1-2 seeds in each fruit and are best left to ripen on the tree for as long as possible. They are a very attractive looking tree that can grow up to 8 meters with, beautiful dark green ruffled compound leaves. They have a dense growth habit making them an ideal shade tree.
Wampee should be treated very much like any of the other citrus trees in regard to cultivation. A sunny, well drained site with plenty of water and organic matter should see these trees thrive.

It is a spectacular landscape plant!!!

The crop is borne solely on the tips of branches, so the less pruning the better. Very few problems have been observed with pest and diseases other than occasional infestations of aphids.
Mature trees can produce up to 50kg of fruit each year. Like its close relative the citrus it is full of vitamin C, approximately 28mg per 100g. This fruit can be used for making jams, jellies, pies, and drinks but best eaten fresh, straight from the tree. If you want them to keep a bit longer you can try leaving the stalks on them.

I left the fruit on the tree until the skin started to turn a slight brown color .

Ate some fruit years ago at the markets and loved it. Have grown at a previous property but left before the trees grew any crop. Didn't realise at the time they are related to citrus, thought they were more like a lychee. Great problem with the flying foxes stealing my entire crop.

Never tried fruit but review of the fruit in Subtropical Gardening Magazine sounded promising. Since planting in the ground in March 2010 growth has been rapid and dense, the folliage alone is quite attractive. By ground I mean sugarcane mulch and a handfull of coir peat as my whole garden is no-dig, no soil.

Comments: - Spring 2011: I couldn't resist buying him when I saw him at a spring market. He didn't seem in the best condition - soil had come out of the pot and was exposing roots and his leaves ere yellow- but there was new growth and I knew he just needed some love. His leaves are starting to turn a better shade of green now that I have fed him up.

Pest Control:

Got some sort of biggishscale on the upper side of the leaves. Scraped them off with my thumb (squished them) then sprayed both sides of the leaves with pest oil.

Comments: - I love the Guy Sam fruits - they are so moreish. Have had trouble getting the Yeem Pay to grow here. I have several seedling plants now, to see what they produce. If the Guy Sam fruits were bigger they could be so popular.
Weighting the branches down inceases flowering, like it does for apples. They also need any alkalinity managed and prefer slightly acidic and organic rich soils.
A nice looking large bush here, bees love the flowers. Likes regular watering.
Our two 10yr old trees were relocated from 700km north and handled this well. I recently lost one of these - I don't know why at this stage. It died quite suddenly.
