I grew this tree from seed 15 years ago while I was living in Sydney. When I moved back to Melbourne I brought it with me. It ended up dying of, I was so dissapointed. I left it in its the pot (it was over a metre high) and forgot about it. About a year later I went to clean the area behind the shed, I noticed that my avocado tree sprouted again. It had 40cm shoot coming out the bottom. I left it in the pot for a few years and then two years ago I decided to plant it in the grown and it just took off. Now it is over 2 metres high and very bushy, lush and green (no fruit yet). I just water and fertilize it now and again in summer and thats all. If it never produces fruit it doesn't worry me, I just love the look of it.

Hi daisy, do you sell or swap cuttings of your trees? I am looking to buy some avo scions off you if that’s ok? I am having so much trouble finding some where to buy them in Australia. I have feurte and bacon from nursery but I’m wanting as many varieties as I can grow lol. I’m addicted to gardening I think and I love avocados and I am doing this as an experiment too. I live in Ballarat so I know I’m pushing my luck here with growing them. I am going to protect them in winter if they are not good in colder weather. Also want to see how I go about growing them in pots and then I can put them in greenhouse in winter too. I have severe health issues so I can’t really afford to buy heaps of trees and I don’t want them to just die on me. So I thought I will multi graft I don’t have room for heaps of trees) to save room too. Anyway I saw you have some varieties I don’t have. I can’t find any lamb hass, wurtz etc anywhere else atm too so I can’t even buy the trees atm. I’m happy to send you some cuttings too if there is anything you would like? I am going to make a list on my edibles soon so you can see what I have. Anyway hope you are well and look forward to hearing from you.

Also I am going to try and buy some varieties that are very cold hardy and rare in Australia from USA if I can. So I can definitely return the favour once I get them. Also I noticed you have pomegranates. I am growing mine from seed and hoping I get some nice fruit but if I don’t I may purchase some cuttings off you too? I know they are super easy to grow from cuttings apparently. I have pink lady and Granny Smith apples so far(young trees), olive tree the variety you use for olive leaf extract which is amazing for your health, it can grow in tubs too it’s super easy to grow from cuttings, I have eureka lemon, several herbs, blue berries, raspberry, bay leaf tree, fig etc so I’m happy to send you some and do some swaps in the near future? I also love to push the boundaries with our zones lol I wish I wasn’t sick cos if I was well again I would love to move to a warmer climate so I can grow all types of avocados. But it’s ok I will stick with growing the ones that are not frost tolerant in pots for now 😊

Although Melbourne's weather may not need both type A and B avocado plants to help set fruits but surely it'll benefit and besides you can't have too many avocados.

Bacon is said to be one of the most cold tolerant avocado plants so it is very suitable to grow in Melbourne and that it produces fruits relatively early, say in its third or fourth year.

This Bacon was from Daley's I bought some time late last year. But died due to root rot. I think the plant was too young to aclimatise to the Melbourne's cold weather, even though it was in a pot. My suggestion is either try to get plants from your area or if you are getting from interstate, climatise it well. Also, too much love will certainly kill it. I now have another Bacon, 2 Hass, and a Pinkerton doing very well.

No pruning, unless its really needed.

Growing very well in 430mm pot - bushy growth - Behind the Bacon is a KP Grafted mango thats had 2 full size fruit in about 15 Years went from Pot to ground and now back in pot (500mm) for last 3 years and had one fruit in that time - will soon get a pic of that up soon

Update 2016 - Now potted into a 230litre pot and really growing well - has only one Avocado on this year but hoping for a huge crop in 2017 - havnt picked as yet as they taste alot better left till they nearly fall in hand maybe in September.

UPDATE - August 2019

Absolutely covered in flowers. Tips of some leaves were burnt over Summer but still growing well in my 45L grow bag.  Going to put into ground this coming Spring - has had two Winters in grow bag.  I also have a Pinkerton and Lamb Hass going into flower at the same time (all the same age), but the Bacon is a bigger and stronger tree at the moment (given it's a full grown and not dwarf avocado, to be expected).  I live just outside of Melbourne in Sunbury, so we don't get heavy frosts often, but still get frosts - it even snowed a few weeks ago - and this guy is still thriving.

Fruit Trees in Tubs. My Avacado Bacon is in a 190 litre Olive drum. It was hit with 42 degrees and very low humidity last summer which burnt the new growth. The tree recovered and in fact has bushed out very well. Expect a crop this coming season.

Soil is worm free and specifically mixed with plenty of body.

Fertilized twice per year with Chook pooh pellets and once a year with maxicrop.

Top of tub is covered with a tree chip/shredded leaf mulch of about 2-3 inches.

Have found that watering is required in summer about once a week (use a hygrometer moisture meter to check regularly). Very little watering if at all required during winter.

Soil temperature is 13-18 degress during winter. Seems there is good warming properties from the tubs which are thick plastic.

Have a tunnel contructed over all my fruit trees to protect from frosts in winter and the harsh hot/dry days we get in summer. Purchased a metalised frost material of about 50% shade value which works well. A little expensive but results worth it. Cover is removed when the frost or sun threat is over.

An excellent plant in top condition when received and a very heallthy plant now.
