Mango - Schneider\'s Pride

Zeni's Edible Fruits
Update: 5721 days 23hrs

I didn't water regularly long enough for it to establish well and then the drought got it. I have no idea how I would get another one as I bought this just as Mr Schneider retired and closed his nursery.

Dwarf Mango - Bowen 7/10

Update: 5358 days 18hrs

Comments: -

Love mangoes but don't want a large tree. Unfortunately it is affected by fungus and all the new growth is crinkley. I don't like using sprays but I think I will be forced to to get any fruit out of this one.

Any suggestions for a "less toxic" (I don't believe in organic!) fungicide before I spray on Mancozeb?

Did you grow it from seed? Ive had many getting off to a wonderful start in my worm farm but thought that they wouldnt do here in Warragul. ive got one thats come up with the compost from the worm farm in my large mint pot. think I'll just keep it all well fed and see what happens .
Linton says... [3098 days 20hrs ago]
Yes, it is grown from seed. I think they should also survive in Warragul. Cheers!

Lovely picture Fred. Is there a secret to getting more fruits from my mango trees?
Fred1 says... [5362 days 22hrs ago]
I am no green thumb - prune the trees after fruiting [for manageable size] - are under irrigation three times a week - but after the lorikeets and the fruit bats, we do seem to get a few mangos

Yes, had some fruit set last year but only 3 mangoes. The Sydney weather this Spring has been good so expect to get more fruit staying on the tree.

Bought a couple of years ago, i protected it in winter for the first couple of seasons but now its in a large pot outside fully exposed during winter and it does fine.

Last season it flowered and a few fruits set but dropped them shortly after. Its a young tree though so its common for that to happen so im not worried. So far im really happy with how its grown. Everyone told me it would not be able to survive here and will die during its first winter.

Mango - Calypso (Seedling) 8/10

Danny333's Edible Fruits
Update: 1468 days 16hrs

Comments: -

This mango is a Calypso seedling I planted in 2012. It has a very small and compact growth habit and is just over a meter tall at 7 years old. I transplanted it into a 130L pot thinking that it was root bound in its original 60L pot only to discover that it had a very small root system and was nowhere near filling its original pot. This probably explains its dwarf growth habit.

this is the only mango that currently grows in my yard that doesn%u2019t require any spraying of fungicides to control anthracnose. It seems to have a very high natural resistance to this disease. It has just started flowering in 2019 and has set many fruit. Hopefully they will hang on till maturity and taste at least as good as the original Calypso.

Mango - Mahachanok/King Thai (Grafted) 10/10

Amanda's Edible Fruits
Update: 2185 days 3hrs

Comments: - This is the best tasting mango I have ever eaten - either here or overseas etc. It's incredible. A lovely complex flavour that is sweet but has this addictive sub-acid undercurrent to it's flavour profile. I am crazy for them. Little fibre, super flat seed - so very large flesh-seed ratio. If you love mangoes then do yourself a favour and plant this one - you won't regret it. The tree is also a semi dwarf type - which is very handy.
It flowers all winter long down here - but only sets fruit once the rains have stopped in mid Spring really. It sets quite a lot of fruit and would imagine that it must set far more in a warmer and drier climate than ours.
I still haven't got my head around the timing of fertilising - in our climate. This selection might be a little more sensitive to boron deficiency though I think - which is a soil-mobile element that can leach from fast draining soils - especially if overwatered (either by heavy rains or retic) I will be adding a very small amount boron at the start of spring, in future, having had problems with insufficiency this spring which caused all the first fruits to fail to thrive and grow,  and then crack open.

Planted: 2014

Height 3 metres

Growing: In the Ground

First Fruited: 3 Years from purchase in pot

Sun/Shade: Medium Sun

Pollination: Self Pollination

Fertiliser or Organics Used: Balanced Acid lovers alternating with slow release organic chook manure pellets. Little and often. Some sulphur in early spring, iron sulphate in winter occasionally.

Question: If I remove the early flowers I get a second flush of flowers at a better time later in spring - but these second flower flushes look different - are they just as productive?

On Bowen mango, we usually lose the flowers in Spring due to anthracnose. They turn brown and drop off. Do you get this problem with the Mahachanok?

MANGO - NAM DOC MAI Mangifera indica 10/10

Danny N1's Edible Fruits
Update: 3376 days 21hrs

Comments: -

Always wanted a mango tree, unfortunatley i live in Adelaide and so need a more cold tolerant variety- so bought this MANGO - NAM DOC MAI Mangifera indica from  Daley's

  - it is a grafted variety from Daley's so i hope to see fruit on the tree sooner than if grown from seed, but all in all it is performing very well and as you can see it has just finished putting out a new flush of growth ( Mango is 10 weeks old), i also have another species of mango (R2E2) i think thats the name ...not sure but it's also doing very well in the Adelaide climate.

Will update progress after an Adelaide winter.......finger's crossed that they put on enough growth to live through it. But will take them indoors during frosty nights.

Planted: 2015

Height 3 Feet

Growing: In a Pot

Qty: 1

Sun/Shade: Full Sun

Pollination: No

Fertiliser or Organics Used: Seasol - Fortnightly

Pest Control: No Pest thus far - fingers crossed.

Question: Is there anyone else in Adelaide growing Mango's with any sucess?. be nice to know : P

Mango - Ono (Grafted)

BJ11_old_address's Edible Fruits
Update: 4743 days 17hrs

Comments: -

This is supposed to be a very tough form of mango. It is growing in a large pot after my Palmer dwarf finally expired. I've put down strawberries as a living mulch and the mango seems quite happy. It has a few branches but isn't growing at a great rate yet (April 2011)

As of June 2011 the plant has put on a spurt and added a further 2 branches. It doesn't seem to want to get any taller - but it does seem healthy!

By the end of 2011 it had several flowers and set fruit. In Jan 2012 I thinned this to 3 fruit only. It is still putting on new growth.

OMG ... home grown mangos are something else entirely. Anyone that can should grow a mango. These were little fruit 12cm long ... but delicious (and the pips were also small). So yummy.

UPDATE 2014: Growing well know, after splitting the 2 trunks by accident with excavator. I staked both trnks, and bound them, has bounced back, wound seems to have healed, and it growing really well

UPDATE 2012: This has a settled in to a dozen good sized mangoes on-board, and has really flourished this year.. and has forgiven me for accidentally "clefting it in twain" from while throwing a sheet a fencing iron behind me whilst working

Just popped out of compost heap when living in Blue Mountains, so I dragged it back here.

No fruit yet, but others in the area go well. I will graft it with a named variety very shortly. It's growing quite well in full sun, on the high/dry side of my garden. I've recently added a swale for it and the other trees in same vicinity.
