Yellow Mangosteen

Yellow Mangosteen is a round fruit with very tart yellow segments. The high acidity makes it ideal for jams and jellies but removing the seed and skin can be time consuming. Easier to grow in the subtropics than the purple mangosteen, but the flavour is altogether different. The tree grows well in full sun and shade. A cousin of the mangosteen, Achachas are tangy and refreshing with a delicate subtle sweetness, a fine balance between sweetness and acidity, producing an unusual taste sensation. Loquat - Nagasakiwase

The best Japanese variety so far, it has deep orange flesh, high flesh/seed ratio and very sweet flavour. Earliest variety to ripen. Thinning fruit will enhance fruit size. The Nagasakiwase often has 2 crops a year in the subtropics. The first crop in April / May then again in August. Shrub native to Asia produces small, orange-yellow flowers followed by fruits, 1cm in diameter produced in in open, branched clusters. Pine Nut

An attractive large pine tree that bears cones of edible nuts. These are considered a delicacy in Mediterranean style cooking, due to their sweet, buttery flavour. Lemon Drop Mangosteen

Very attractive slow growing tree, with dark green leathery leaves. Native to wet forests of Central America. Oval shaped fruits are produced in summer reaching up to 2cm. The white pulp has a pleasant subacid aromatic flavour, with a similar flavour to the Achacha. Very ornamental making an excellent display potted plant. While the tree may not produce fruit in colder regions, the leaves are quite cold hardy and can tolerate winter conditions. May require protection from frosts when young. The brown fruit envelopes the highly nutritious nuts WARNING: The nuts should not be eaten raw as the toxin in the oil can induce nausea and vomiting. They are delicious roasted. Goji Berry - Shrub

The Goji Berry is native to the Himalayas and inner Mongolia where it has been used for thousands of years. They have a juicy taste comparable to cranberries or tangy plums. The Goji Berry is a sprawling shrubby vine that lives for 5-8 years. The fruits are small and shiny red with oval berries about 1cm long with lots of small edible seeds in the center. Plants prefer a sheltered sunny spot with good drainage and respond well to pruning after fruiting which can help keep its sprawling habit under control. Lycium barbarum grows into a shrub 2.5m high and wide.
