Why Fruitylicious1 Love's Edible Plants

I grew up in a family surrounded by tropical fruit trees in the Philippines where we can eat fresh fruits and veggies most of the time. My parents and my granparents gave us fruits for snack rather than lollies and chocs. My grandpa had an orchard too when he was still alive. I was trully blessed with exotic fruits when i was growing up. And now in my adopted homeland i am trying to do the same for my family. To appreciate the taste of a freshly picked fruit and veggies "at will".

Tomorrow (18/01/18) is a precursor of a long fiery week with a constant 40C and up everyday for seven days here in inland NSW. I have done the necessary prep after work today to combat the forthcoming hellish afterburner for a week. I hope i wont suffer any flora casualties within this coming heatwave.

At last the horrible unrelenting heatwave has finally loosen it's grip (31/01/18). So far no casualties among my greenies. I can rest for a while until the next blow torch's visit.

(09-02-18) The brutal summer heatwave in inland NSW has comeback with a vengeance starting today for eight consecutive days of unrelenting heat of 37C-41C. Truly global warming is becoming a common occurrence everywhere. Again i have to increase the irrigation frequency to keep my precious plants alive and healthy and keep them out of reach of the smouldering fireball above the sky.

Comments: - North American Paw Paw is a member of the annonaceae family (custard apple)  which include cherimoya, atemoya, rollinia, A. squamosa, soursop (graviola), soncoya etc which most of them have superb taste. Unlike the other members of annonaceae family asimina triloba can survive freezing conditions up to -25C when dormant especially the Canadian selection NC1. So gardeners from the temperate regions of Australia from Tasmania, Victoria to Canberra and some parts of inland NSW  if you are after a tropical fruit flavour (taste like mango and banana combined) but situated in a frosty area this is the fruit for you. Most asiminas need a pollinator to set fruit. But there are some American and Italian varieties that are purportedly self fertile (Prima - Italian, Sunflower and Sweet Virginia - both  are American selections). Unfortunately most asiminas in Australia are the self infertile variety. Seed importation is a prerogative for those seeking the self fertile cultivars.

wow, I didn't know we could get any known cultivators here in Australia. I am near albury/Wodonga and have 4 asimina's growing, all about 1.5-2m tall. they had set fruit this year (with the help of hand pollination) but the wind and the birds got to them. 16-11-17 Just repotted my Jabos into a slightly bigger container. They responded pretty quickly within days with new numerous gorgeous growth. My potting mix recipe ; azalea potting mix, perlite, pine bark, peat moss in equal proportion plus a sprinkling of azalea pert. Watered them with a weak solution of seasol. They are situated on the eastern side of the house about 1 meter away from the brick wall. They are expose to the morning sun from 7:00 a.m. to 2 p.m. avoiding the harsh afternoon sun. They are very happy looking brazilians indeed.

Bitter gourd/melon has many health benefits. Purpotedly it can help cure cancer, it treats blood disorders, can stop cholera, it can help diabetes sufferers by lowering sugar levels in blood and urine, boosts energy levels, can stop gout, boosts your immune system etc. It can even allegedly cure a hangover. This plant is not for everyone. If you despise bitter taste stay away from it. It surely is bitter. Some people mash the flesh with salt and wash it with water to lessen the bitterness, but, by doing so you are draining away the essential medicinal chemicals that can cure various ailments.  I used to plant this in our frontyard when i was a kid  in the Philippines and now in Australia.

The fruits are yummy and refreshing and the flowers are heavenly scented. Growing as an informal espalier at the moment in a 50 cm pot just like my double grafted orange. They are drip irrigated to easily manage the watering regime. Regular application of epsom salt and sulphate of potash to keep them lush and fruitful. Regular pruning and tieing to maintain shape of the tree.

It's so refreshing. The combination of sweet and sour taste combined with the mouth watering juiciness of the fruit is irresistible. The blossoms' heady perfume in spring is a glorious experience as well. Growing as an informal espalier. Another great advantage is the extended fruiting season in the same tree which is great for small backyard.

This feijoa variety is less vigorous than its other siblings. Its good for smaller backyard and for espaliering which I am currently doing with my unique feijoa. So far so good. The stems are pliable and not too stiff and robust.

As usual my family love feijoas. We just eat them out of the tree. We tasted our first feijoas at the edge of the carpark of Weribee museum in Victoria. Every autumn we would check the two feijoa trees probably seedling grown varieties for ripe fruits and share the loot among ourselves and with our friends.  Yummy !!! Thats when I decided to plant my own feijoa collection.

So far the only nasties bothering my 3 feijoas are the brown and green grasshoppers munching the young shoots. I just sprayed it with chilli and garlic juice concoction to make the leaves inedible for the critters. If I  happen to spot  them i spray them with the potent brew to stun them and then squash them with my hands. So far they are staying away from my feijoas.

Arrived last month (Nov, 2017) a little bit distressed. With sparse and pale leaves and stems. Obviously its a bit lacking in essential nutrients. I immediately repotted it with a mixture of premium potting mix, perlite, coarse pine bark and a bit of dyna lifter and peat moss. Gave it a refreshing drink of weak seasol and rain water and i applied sugarcane mulch. It quickly rewarded me with shiny, healthy beautiful growth within a week. He is now a happy Brazilian.

'Heavenly' best describe the taste of custard apple for me.

Happy with the condition of the plant upon arrival. Big (about 1 meter high) lush and healthy. I hope it can cope well with the hot burning summer and cold frosty winter of inland NSW. I'm hoping the same for my African Pride variety.  I will update at the end of summer next year.

I have three plants growing at the moment trained as espaliers. One is trained as an informal, the second one is simple horizontal and the last one is a variation of the simple horizontal. It's my way of expressing myself.

Comments: - I love chilli's (mid heat) in my cooking and to perk up my veggie salad. Chilli's grow best in dappled shade. I feed it regularly with Dyna lifter, complete organic fert for tomato interspersed with Epsom salt to keep them lush, green and productive.

Feijoa - Nazematze (Grafted) ^8/10

I like this particular variety because its ability to remain unaffected by browning due to oxidation when the flesh is cut and exposed, not  to mention the guava like taste without the acidity and hard seeds. I usually eat the whole fruit including skin and rind.

They grow best in sub-tropic to temperate climates.They'll be marginal in the tropics because they need at least 50 units of chill hours for the flavour to reach its full potential.

Nov 2018 Currently trained as espalier. Has profusion of flowers after just more than a year from purchase. Fed it with sudden impact by neutrog and super phosphate. Growth is steady and vigorous. Can't wait for the fruits to ripen if they happen to mature.

Easy to maintain and quicker fruit production time. Taste is great. I will have to protect it in winter though. I'm going to rig appropriately rated heat lamp in my garage inside a protected cocoon to keep it warm and cozy during the freezing nights and frosty early mornings. Might even cover the trunk with foam for extra protection. Anyway plenty of time to enjoy the long growing season ahead. Will update after next years' winter.

Update 14 May 2018 The nights and early mornings are becoming colder now (3C) here in Inland NSW. I have moved my dwarf papaya indoors in a sunny north facing spare room with grow light to match. It is currently flowering. Let see if it will bear fruit during the colder months. Will update again during spring or summer.

There are conflicting reports about this cherimoya variety but majority of it are positive. What I think is, oftentimes the taste of the fruit and its overall performance will greatly depend upon its microclimate. The nearer we can simulate  its original habitat the greater the chance that it will reach its full potential. Add to that the general care given to the tree. Its the dominant commercial variety in the U.S. so a lot of people must have like it to become commercially viable for growers to produce. My white cheri will complement my recently acquired cheri sofia.

First time to bear fruit after four years in a pot and boy its loaded. The fruit is small to medium size because it is a cross between a regular apple and a crab apple. It's got a pink flesh with a balanced flavor of sweetness and acidity. The tree is healthy, and a  prolific bearer as evidenced by the image i have uploaded from my tree, pest free ATM. It's ornamental in itself because of the reddish leaves and stems Just nice for kids' lunch box.  There is a similar apple released recently called Red Love apple bred from Switzerland by Markus Kobelt. Mine is discovered  by Bob Magnus of Woodbridge Nursery growing in Huonville, Tassie. Growing as a 'Y' espalier ATM in my garden.

custard apple family including sugar apple and cherimoya are up there in my list of favorite fruits. The taste is divine i would say.

Just like my Paxton Prolific it arrived in optimum condition, robust, healthy and lush. I will keep a close look with  my 2 latest fruitopia acquisitions coz today is the start of a long, hot hellish summer here in inland NSW culminating in a sizzling 38C next Friday. Whew!!! im already sweating just by thinking about it. I will update  by mid autumn when the burning cauldron has cooled down a tad.

Super scrumptious specially when eaten before they are fully ripe (Non-Astringent). Crunchy, sweet and refreshing. They are the next one to mature when all of the spring and summer fruits were just wonderful gastronomic mem'ries. The pendulous, sunburnt orange colored fruit hanging on a bare tree is a stunning vision to behold when everything starts to cool down heralding the arrival of winter.
