Lilly Pilly - Riberry

The small leaved lilly pilly produces masses of red pear shaped fruit. Its handsome purple-red growth makes this lilly pilly one of the favourites as an Edible Hedge. The fruit exhibits a juicy but slightly acidic finish. Which is reminiscent of cinnamon and cloves. It is a very popular ingredient in wild-food dishes.

Lilly Pilly - Rain Cherry

Attractive tree, masses of creamy-yellow flowers attract birds and are followed by bright pink-red fruits in profusion. They are edible and can be used in jams and preserves. Occurs as an understory tree in the rainforests of northern Australia, New Guinea and the Aru Islands.

Hoop Pine

This is the tallest of the native pines and it is quite capable of reaching heights of more than 40 metres making it an impressive addition to my garden. Sub-tropical and dry rainforest tree growing from Richmond River, NSW to Gympie, SE QLD.The yellow, elastic and durable timber was used extensively for coach building because of its steam bending qualities. Good shade tree.

Flame Tree

Lacebark

The large, bell-shaped flowers are usually deep pink and occur in clusters at the ends of the branches. The flowers are very spectacular and are followed by seed capsules which contain many large seeds.

Palm - Foxtail

First discovered in 1978 in a tiny area within Melville National Park, this palm is now one of the most widely planted in the world. Famous for it bushy fronds and slightly bulbous base, it lends a exotic, tropical look to landscaping. Able to survive heat, salt winds and seasonally dry conditions. Slow growing. Plum Pine

Attractive rainforest pine that bears seeds on swollen edible stalks - which is the 'plum'. The seeds get darker the riper they are. The purple 'fruit' are grape-like with a sweet, juicy, soft jelly-like pulp with a subtle plum flavour. The slightly resinous fruit can be used for both sweet and savoury recipes. Masses of white flowers appear in the spring, followed by fruits every second or third summer. The large brightly coloured purple fruit are tasteless and floury by human standards. Palm - Black

The black palm is endemic to the wet tropics of north Queensland. The edible flesh of the fruits are much sought after by cassowaries. Black palms will only thrive in situations that are humid and warm year round. They need rich soil and some shade when young. Lilly PIlly - Sour Cherry

When in fruit both the tree and the ground below are bright red. The fruit is tart and refreshing like a Granny Smith apple. The tree is highly attractive and forms a very dense crown making it an ideal shade tree. Unlike other lilly pillies the new growth is a pale green. It is slow growing initially making it perfect for containers.

Onion Cedar

This rare and endangered tree was heavily logged for its timber which is as beautiful as red cedar once it has been soaked to remove the onion scent. If the bark is scratched this also has the aroma of onions. The bright pinkish red fruits attract the beautiful Wompoo and Rose crowned fruit doves, the fruits also smell of onions. The tree is large and attractive and is found in the edges of sub tropical rain forests and in the areas where the rainforest meets the eucalypt forests of northern NSW and southern Queensland. Trees will grow best in well drained rich soil.

Mature Strangler Fig at Sheep Station Creek in Border Ranges

As a strangler fig the seeds germinate high in the canopy of the rainforest on a limb or in the fork of a tree. The small trees sends out aerial roots which head for the ground where they take root and begin the process of strangling the host tree, this can take 100 years or more to completely rot the original tree leaving a lattice work of roots and a hollow trunked fig tree. They can be grown as a free standing tree provided they have plenty of room, makes a lovely indoor potted plant or bonsai. Fruits are edible.

Lignum vitae

An excellent tree for regeneration plots, this tree is fast growing, attractive and fruits when young. The bright pink fruits attract Green Catbirds and Rose Crowned Fruit Doves. Blue Quandong

Fast growing rainforest tree. The species is well regarded for its timber and as a key in regenerating rainforest. The fruit of this species is round and blue, between 20 and 30 mm across, and has a seed with deep convolutions in its shell. These are eaten whole by cassowaries, woompoo pigeon and spectacled flying foxes, which pass the nut undamaged. A large tree up to 50 metres tall, usually with elaborate buttressed roots.
