Blue Quandong

Fast growing rainforest tree. The species is well regarded for its timber and as a key in regenerating rainforest. The fruit of this species is round and blue, between 20 and 30 mm across, and has a seed with deep convolutions in its shell. These are eaten whole by cassowaries, woompoo pigeon and spectacled flying foxes, which pass the nut undamaged. A large tree up to 50 metres tall, usually with elaborate buttressed roots. Flowers, fruit, foliage and shape make this an ideal tree for large gardens or parks.

Lilly Pilly - Brush Cherry

A compact shrub which can be kept to around 3m tall and 1m wide. Masses of white flowers followed by berries in Summer and Autumn. In the forest will grow to about 10m. Great for hedges and screens.

Lilly Pilly - Rain Cherry

Flame Tree

Onion Cedar

This rare and endangered tree was heavily logged for its timber which is as beautiful as red cedar once it has been soaked to remove the onion scent. If the bark is scratched this also has the aroma of onions. The bright pinkish red fruits attract the beautiful Wompoo and Rose crowned fruit doves, the fruits also smell of onions. The tree is large and attractive and is found in the edges of sub tropical rain forests and in the areas where the rainforest meets the eucalypt forests of northern NSW and southern Queensland. Trees will grow best in well drained rich soil.

Palm - Foxtail

First discovered in 1978 in a tiny area within Melville National Park, this palm is now one of the most widely planted in the world. Famous for it bushy fronds and slightly bulbous base, it lends a exotic, tropical look to landscaping. Able to survive heat, salt winds and seasonally dry conditions. Slow growing. Lilly Pilly - Purple Cherry

Masses of white flowers appear in the spring, followed by fruits every second or third summer. The large brightly coloured purple fruit are tasteless and floury by human standards. The tree is a splendid ornamental, hardy in full sun and tolerant of some frost. It can grow into a large buttressed 35-40m tree. The bright red new growth can be seen from a distance.

Cassowary Pine

This is a beautiful tree with large glossy leaves and stunning pendulous flowers. The flowers produce large quantities of nectar which attract lots of wildlife. Cassowary love feeding on the large fruits when in season. Also called the mango pine, this deciduous or semi-deciduous tree is found in New Guinea and Australia chiefly in coastal areas. The glossy leaves tend to be whorled at the ends of the branches, The fragrant white flowers are in long pendulous spikes and appear just prior to the new growth flush. Will grow as far south as subtropical Northern NSW.

Endemic to Lord Howe Island this is an elegant plant well suited to growing in pots as an indoor specimen as well as outdoors in gardens and parks as it is a fine specimen plant. Attractive rainforest pine that bears seeds on swollen edible stalks - which is the 'plum'. The seeds get darker the riper they are. The purple 'fruit' are grape-like with a sweet, juicy, soft jelly-like pulp with a subtle plum flavour. The slightly resinous fruit can be used for both sweet and savoury recipes. Corduroy Tamarind

Blunt-leaved Tulip

Attractive small tree, although the species may grow to 20 metres high, most trees are less than 10 metres high. The new growth is an unusual bluish-black colour. Eye-catching orange fruits are produced in abundance and split to revel shiny black seeds that are surrounded by a bright red aril.

The small trees sends out aerial roots which head for the ground where they take root and begin the process of strangling the host tree, this can take 100 years or more to completely rot the original tree leaving a lattice work of roots and a hollow trunked fig tree.
