Avocado 10/10

Bizibee's Edible Fruits
Update: 4923 days 10hrs

Comments: -

I grew this tree from seed 15 years ago while I was living in Sydney. When I moved back to Melbourne I brought it with me. It ended up dying of, I was so dissapointed. I left it in its the pot (it was over a metre high) and forgot about it. About a year later I went to clean the area behind the shed, I noticed that my avocado tree sprouted again. It had 40cm shoot coming out the bottom. I left it in the pot for a few years and then two years ago I decided to plant it in the grown and it just took off. Now it is over 2 metres high and very bushy, lush and green (no fruit yet). I just water and fertilize it now and again in summer and thats all. If it never produces fruit it doesn't worry me, I just love the look of it.

Hi would you kindly sell me some scions? I am looking for Any varieties really that I haven’t got. I have bacon and fuerte got from nursery. They are still in pots and still quite young but I can swap some scions with them and I have other fruit trees too. I live in vic in cold Temp zone. So I know I’m pushing my luck here.i don’t want to waste heaps more money on avo trees cos they may not even make it down here. I am going to put heaps in pots and grow in greenhouse though. But any scions would be very much appreciated and I will pay you and for shipping of course. I can’t find any where that sells avo scions and also this variety of avo tree. Where did you get the Gwen from? Thanks in advance Jon. Also would you know the best places to buy or swap avocado scions, seeds, grafted trees?

Hi daisy, do you sell or swap cuttings of your trees? I am looking to buy some avo scions off you if that’s ok? I am having so much trouble finding some where to buy them in Australia. I have feurte and bacon from nursery but I’m wanting as many varieties as I can grow lol. I’m addicted to gardening I think and I love avocados and I am doing this as an experiment too. I live in Ballarat so I know I’m pushing my luck here with growing them. I am going to protect them in winter if they are not good in colder weather. Also want to see how I go about growing them in pots and then I can put them in greenhouse in winter too. I have severe health issues so I can’t really afford to buy heaps of trees and I don’t want them to just die on me. So I thought I will multi graft I don’t have room for heaps of trees) to save room too. Anyway I saw you have some varieties I don’t have. I can’t find any lamb hass, wurtz etc anywhere else atm too so I can’t even buy the trees atm. I’m happy to send you some cuttings too if there is anything you would like? I am going to make a list on my edibles soon so you can see what I have. Anyway hope you are well and look forward to hearing from you.

Also I am going to try and buy some varieties that are very cold hardy and rare in Australia from USA if I can. So I can definitely return the favour once I get them. Also I noticed you have pomegranates. I am growing mine from seed and hoping I get some nice fruit but if I don’t I may purchase some cuttings off you too? I know they are super easy to grow from cuttings apparently. I have pink lady and Granny Smith apples so far(young trees), olive tree the variety you use for olive leaf extract which is amazing for your health, it can grow in tubs too it’s super easy to grow from cuttings, I have eureka lemon, several herbs, blue berries, raspberry, bay leaf tree, fig etc so I’m happy to send you some and do some swaps in the near future? I also love to push the boundaries with our zones lol I wish I wasn’t sick cos if I was well again I would love to move to a warmer climate so I can grow all types of avocados. But it’s ok I will stick with growing the ones that are not frost tolerant in pots for now 😊

Avocado - Rincon (Grafted)

VF1's Edible Fruits
Update: 4628 days 21hrs

Comments: -

Love all avo's. Is one of my "A" varieties. Is a dwarf variety with a spreading habit, and much slower grower than my others. The tree's not attractive - very gangly looking.  Fruit written off by some, but my family found it nice tasting - very creamy/buttery and mild flavour (maybe only has nice fruit where it's not too hot/humid or too cold). Fruit not a good storer once cut though, as the invisible strings darken. Best eaten within 24-48hrs. Don't discount this one for the backyard if you have limited space.

Note: Fruit ripe now (April-May) when there is none at any road-side stalls (Tamborine Mt.), so I'm happy!

Fruiting Months March, April, May, June

Planted: 2010

Height 1.3 metres

Growing: In the Ground

Qty: 1

First Fruited: 2 Years from purchase in pot

Sun/Shade: Full Sun

Water Given in: Autumn

Pollination: Cross Pollination

Cross Pollinator Variety: Sheppard

Fertiliser or Organics Used: Manure and Citrus fertiliser

When I Fertilise: Spring

Pest Control:

None yet, but I may net next crop as something (possum/bushrats?) pulled off/damaged most of crop. Only 2 fruit survived.

Question:

When is it best to prune,as I'd like to attempt to shape tree?

This is apparently an Israeli cultivar. Fruit is thin skinned and a bit rubbery.  Taste is OK but is ideal for use in avocado dip. Our soil is not the best for avos but this one has survived were others have died.
